Mercedes set for fresh upgrades at British Grand Prix

After impressive showing in Azerbaijan and Canada, Mercedes are hoping upgrades will help keep that momentum going at Silverstone

-

Mercedes technical director Mike Elliott confirmed the team will introduce new upgrades at the 2022 British Grand Prix as they look to fight it out at the front of the field.

The Silver Arrows are coming off consecutive third and fourth place finishes in Baku and Montreal, and there are signs they are finally starting to make progress in unlocking the potential of the W13.

Mercedes have struggled at bumpy tracks given they extract the best performance from their car when it’s run very low to the ground. With Silverstone known as a smooth circuit, Elliott remained coy on the team’s chances despite confirming new parts will be available as well.

“We will be bringing new bits to Silverstone, we will be trying to push the car forward, trying to get some pace from the car we’ve got or from the package we’ve got as well as the new bits we are going to add to it,” Elliott said in Mercedes’ post-Canada race debrief video.

“I think at the same time though we have to be honest with ourselves and say that at the moment we are just a little bit behind those front runners in Ferrari and Red Bull. And in a normal race I think it is going to be tough.”

Mercedes not expecting dramatic difference

Although a trip to Silverstone means a more traditional circuit after a run of three consecutive street races, Elliott isn’t expecting a huge improvement in performance.

“I think Silverstone will be a circuit that suits us a little bit better, like Barcelona did, but maybe it will be just a little bit difficult,” Elliott said. “Whatever happens we will push as hard as we can.

“Our drivers will push as hard as we can because we want to get back to winning. We want to win for the team, we definitely want to win and we want to win for you, the fans, so let’s see what happens.”
