Mentality monster Lando Norris puts Miami GP win in the past

Norris took his maiden career win in the United States, but isn’t daydreaming of it in Italy

Lando Norris will not be caught asleep at the wheel remembering his 2024 Miami Grand Prix victory as he ensures he will be focusing fully on the Emilia Romagna GP, hosted at the Imola Circuit in Italy.

The McLaren driver received an unexpected, but welcome surprise, in the United States when a fortunately-timed safety car gave him the lead of the race ahead of Max Verstappen, which he masterfully converted into his maiden career win in Formula 1.

The result broke a run of 110 race entries without taking the top step of the podium for the British driver to send him into ecstasy, avenging the heartbreak of the 2021 Russian GP when late rain took away what was a sure victory.

But as he prepares to put on his racing gloves and helmet to tackle the first European race of a mammoth F1 calendar in 2024, he insists he is focused entirely on doing the job for his team, no matter how that result appears, and that Miami is firmly in the past.

“I celebrated appropriately for the for the occasion,” Norris told select members of the press, including, ahead of the Imola weekend. “It’s another weekend so I’ve had to make sure I’m prepared and ready to go, but I still think of it a lot. I still think of it now.

“But the same time as much as you want to keep it in your mind you have to turn your focus to next weekend, which is this one and hopefully try to replicate a similar thing.

“But it was an amazing, amazing weekend and one I’ll probably remember for the rest of my life. So incredible and I made the most of it and as much as I loved it. It’s now on to the next.”

Norris reflects on growth as a person

Norris came into the sport in 2019 straight from Formula 2 and was thrust into battling in the upper-midfield of the grid with McLaren, in what was almost a baptism by fire against Carlos Sainz, who scored a podium that same season.

Whilst the Spaniard did have the edge during their two seasons together, Norris truly came into his own when he assumed the role of team leader from the start of 2021. From then, he’s only continued to go from strength-to-strength by taking his first pole and eventually his first win since.

But it wasn’t easy and there were a lot of near misses such as the 2021 Russian GP, 2021 Italian GP and the 2023 Qatar GP, so how did he handle those setbacks and how does he approach any disappointment now?

“I feel like I’m at a point where I can deal with the good times,” Norris added. “And I can deal with the bad times.

“Everyone deals with them differently, but I don’t need to have to go out and look for that kind of support. I feel like I’m in a much better place than I was a few years ago. I’ve just matured and got the experience of it, that I can deal with myself and be happy, celebrate it, but then return back to normality and focus on the next one.”
