Max Verstappen wants more after 2024 Chinese GP victory: Issues Red Bull demand

The Dutchman dominated the race around Shanghai, winning by 13.7 seconds, but showcased his elite mentality by demanding more from his team

Max Verstappen might have crushed the opposition at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix to extend his championship lead to 25 points, but he was far from happy as he ordered Red Bull to ensure they get on top of their inconsistent set-ups.

The Dutchman’s weekend began on the backfoot as he struggled to drive the car through Sprint Qualifying when the conditions suddenly swapped to torrential rain, leaving him fourth for the Sprint Race which he later won easily.

Then in Sunday’s race at the Shanghai International Circuit, he claimed his 58th career win by dominating proceedings and often lapping over three quarters of a second faster than his teammate, with the only risky moments being when he had to navigate safety car restarts.

So, from the outside, it looked like a pretty straightforward weekend after Sprint Qualifying but he’s unhappy with the team after another inconsistent performance concerning set-up on his runaway RB20 car.

“The performance in the main race was an improvement compared to the Sprint Race,” Verstappen said to select members of the press after the Chinese GP, including

“So, it just made my life a bit easier as well. It could be a little bit more consistent while driving.”

Verstappen added, “In terms of just balance in the car, we did a good job as a team to make it even better than what it was at the start of the weekend.”

Verstappen warns Red Bull against complacency

After the Sprint Qualifying, Red Bull really did enjoy a fine weekend. The car was very quick and had no challengers on Verstappen‘s front, whilst Sergio Perez managed to deliver two third-place finishes to add to their weekend haul.

That’s now the team’s fourth win of the season, fifth pole and fourth double-podium finish meaning that they’re on pace to eclipse last season’s constructors’ championship tally, but the reigning world champion has told them not to get lazy when they pitch up at the Hard Rock Stadium for the 2024 Miami GP in May.

“Different tyres, different tarmac,” Verstappen said when asked if they will have the same pace in the United States. “So, you never know. We need to be perfect.

“You need to try and be perfect. You need to always try and find the best setup on the car to be able to show performances like we did today, that’s what we’ll try to do.

“But also, at the other end, I don’t want to think about it too much right now. First of all I want to go home and then we’ll prepare like we always do, and hopefully that’s good enough when we get there.”
