Max Verstappen to compete in TWO races as Red Bull star brings motorhome to Imola

The Dutchman faces a busy schedule after being lined up for two races at Imola

Red Bull star Max Verstappen has confirmed he will participate in two races at the Formula 1 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend at Imola.

The Dutchman is one of the favourites to take pole position in qualifying in Italy after clinching pole in all six races so far this season, before starting on the grid for Sunday’s race.

But as he searches for his 59th career race victory, Verstappen will also juggle real-life responsibilities with virtual racing. He has been included in Team Redline’s lineup for the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring event during the race weekend, although he will not be required to be present for the entirety of the race duration.

Verstappen has insisted he did not need to ask Red Bull for special dispensation to enter as it doesn’t clash with his weekend schedule – and hit out at critics for questioning his motives behind participating in sim racing.

“Whether I had to ask permission? No, ultimately I decide what I do. I also can’t decide for other people what to do on a Saturday night,” Verstappen told De Telegraaf. “People can go somewhere to eat or drink and do crazy things. It’s my free time. I am professional enough to see for myself what is and is not possible.”

Explaining how the race format will work, Verstappen said: “Of course I don’t have a lot of time, so we have to see how it works out. I expect that there will be four of us ‘sitting’ on the car. I’ll probably do two stints between two and four hours [but] no, not at night. I have to go to bed on time and get my hours to start Sunday well rested.”

Why Verstappen is staying in a motorhome

Fans will never have been closer to the three-time world champion at an F1 circuit after reports suggested Verstappen has brought his state-of-the-art motorhome to Imola for the first time.

The Red Bull driver announced last year that he would have a motorhome built so he could stay in it during European races, which will cut down on carbon emissions and allow him to spend more time with his family.

What’s more, he will be closer to the circuit during his down time as the motorhome will be stationed at a campsite nearly, meaning he can avoid the journey to and from Red Bull’s team hotel.

But it’s not only location and family that Verstappen will benefit from. As an avid gamer and streamer in his spare time, the 26-year-old often brings his gaming equipment with him to race weekends and plays in his spare time.

Thanks to the motorhome, he will be able to connect his £30,000 setup using a high-speed internet connection and take part in the virtual race with his Team Redline colleagues during the race weekend.
