Max Verstappen reveals one stipulation to stay at Red Bull

Max Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028 but does reportedly have exit clauses

Max Verstappen‘s only condition for staying at Red Bull is a ‘peaceful environment’ around the team, with the Dutchman currently contracted to the reigning champions until the end of 2028.

And as Verstappen prepares for the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, he said the conversation around the team has shifted to on-track performance rather than off-track controversies, as was the case at the start of the season.

Christian Horner‘s investigation over alleged ‘inappropriate and controlling behaviour’ towards a female employee overshadowed pre-season testing and the BahrainSaudi Arabian GP double-header, with the fallout also affecting Jos Verstappen and threatening Helmut Marko‘s position at Red Bull.

But while the complainant has appealed Red Bull‘s decision to clear Horner of any wrongdoing and the case remains ongoing, the narrative around the team has changed at least temporarily.

“I signed after ’21, I signed a long deal with the team,” Verstappen told members of the media including “The only thing that I always said from the beginning is, of course, that you want to have a quiet, peaceful environment.

“I do think, lately we have been talking about the cars. I’m very happy about that. We are talking about the performance of the car, that’s also how it should be. And of course, as long as I’m happy with the team there’s never been a reason to leave.”

Verstappen confident there’s more to come from RB20

Apart from a brake problem ending Verstappen‘s Australian GP, the RB20 has comfortably seen off all challengers in 2024 with the Dutchman topping every competitive session he’s completed.

He’s never won at the Shanghai International Circuit though, largely thanks to the track’s five-year absence from the calendar in the time that Verstappen’s won three championships.

But he remains the heavy favourite to take victory in China, and also questioned Adrian Newey‘s claim that Red Bull have almost maximised the RB20.

“I think Australia the Friday wasn’t ideal, and maybe this Saturday morning wasn’t,” Verstappen added. “I think we made some changes to my car that I felt better with, but unfortunately, I couldn’t I couldn’t show that.

“I also don’t think Australia is the same as here. I would say Australia had a lot more faster corners, here it’s a little bit more low speed so it’s a little bit different. You just have to wait and see.

“I mean, I do think that there is a lot more to come from the car. Also that’s why they took the engineering route on this car., they see there is more potential. But at the end of the day, it’s difficult to know how much, it’s a continuous work in progress I guess.”
