Max Verstappen issues five-word response over Red Bull future

The Dutchman is under contract until 2028 but has been linked with a switch to Mercedes as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton

Max Verstappen refused to give any assurances that he is ready to commit himself to Red Bull for next season after staying tight-lipped over his future ahead of the Formula 1 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

The Dutchman has been strongly linked with a move to Mercedes, with reports of a massive £128million-a-year offer from the Silver Arrows surfacing prior to the Miami Grand Prix.

Toto Wolff is keen to capture Verstappen as a long-term replacement for Lewis Hamilton, who is joining Ferrari next season, and has publicly declared his intention to lure the 26-year-old to fill the vacant seat – a move that infuriated Red Bull officials.

But after speaking openly about his future at previous races, suggesting Mercedes‘ financial power would not be the main factor in convincing him to join them, Verstappen was in no mood to discuss his future ahead of the Emilia Romagna GP at Imola.

When asked if there was an update on his future, Verstappen gave a blunt response to the written press in Imola, including Total-Motorsport.com, saying: “There is nothing to tell.”

Mercedes boss Wolff has indicated he is willing to wait for Verstappen to make a decision on his future, although that doesn’t seem to be likely to arrive before the summer break when drivers typically negotiate with other teams about securing a potential drive.

Why Verstappen could leave Red Bull

Verstappen has insisted he is happy with life at Red Bull “at the moment”, and that is hardly a surprise given that the three-time world champion has won 38 of the last 50 races in Formula 1 – dominating from the front with the team he joined in 2016.

But he has offered no guarantees that he will stay with the team beyond the 2025 season, despite signing a £40m-a-year contract that ties him to the Milton Keynes outfit until 2028.

A period of internal turmoil has seen Adrian Newey leave the Austrian manufacturer, while doubts remain over the future of senior management figures such as Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. It is understood Verstappen has a clause allowing him to leave if Marko decides to step down from his role.

In the event that Verstappen departs, Red Bull have lined up Oscar Piastri, Yuki Tsunoda and Carlos Sainz as potential replacements. However, their options are decreasing after Lando Norris and Alex Albon both signed new contracts with McLaren and Williams respectively.
