Max Verstappen breaks rare record that Lewis Hamilton couldn’t manage

The Red Bull star continues to set a high bar in Formula 1

Max Verstappen has been breaking records ever since he first made the step into Formula 1 back in 2015, when the Red Bull driver became the youngest driver in history to compete in a grand prix at just 17 years old.

Since then, the Dutchman has made it look easy in surpassing achievements in the record books as he continues to rewrite history. Only last season, Verstappen became the first driver to win 19 races in a season and scored the most championship points too with 575 – more than double of the next closest challenger, Sergio Perez.

And he has already broken the seal on 2024 by making history at the Saudi Arabian GP. In clinching his ninth victory in a row, Verstappen also registered his 100th podium finish in F1 – a remarkable feat considering he has made only 187 starts.

By doing so, he joined an exclusive club filled with F1 champions past and present, with Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso the only other drivers to have achieved it.

But from that pool of drivers, Verstappen is the only man to have reached the century while under the age of 30. And he did it by some distance as well, with his 27th birthday not until September.

The next youngest driver on the list was Vettel, who clinched his 100th podium at the age of 30 years and eight months. It seems unlikely that Verstappen’s record will be beaten anytime soon due to Red Bull’s incredible dominance over the past two years.

Verstappen going for more records

Granted, there is a caveat with this particular record. For example, Hamilton did not begin his F1 career until he was 22 – some five years older than Verstappen. However, the pair achieved the feat in a similar timescale.

Hamilton’s debut came in 2007 at the Australian Grand Prix and nine years later, at the 2016 Russian GP, he reached the milestone. Likewise, Verstappen has been racing for nine years following his debut with Toro Rosso.

But there are some records which will take a while for Verstappen to get his hands on. As it is well-documented, Hamilton also holds the record for the most drivers’ championships with seven, equalling Schumacher’s haul in 2020.

In addition, the Briton has the most podiums in F1 history (197), most race wins (103) and highest number of poles (104), so Verstappen has some way to go to breaking those particular records.

But few would bet against him if he continues in the sport until 2028, as he has previously declared, with plenty of years remaining for the flying Dutchman to dominate F1 for years to come.
