F1’s new Madrid race reveals detailed circuit design, featuring La Monumental banking and multiple overtaking zones

Madrid’s much-anticipated arrival on the Formula 1 calendar is one step closer after organisers officially unveiled the final layout of the new Madring circuit.

The track, set to host the Spanish Grand Prix from 2026 under a 10-year deal, was presented in a special event attended by regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, Madrid mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida, and Carlos Sainz, who will serve as the race’s ambassador.

The 5.4-kilometre layout promises a thrilling 57-lap race, blending Madrid’s urban backdrop with a specially built motorsport complex.

An onboard simulation revealed key features and layout of the Madring circuit, which includes 22 turns, sweeping corners, hard braking zones, and a visually spectacular banked curve inspired by Madrid’s historic bullrings.

Madring to blend city streets with purpose-built sections

The race will roar into life with a 589-metre straight, leading into Turns 1 and 2 — a prime overtaking opportunity as cars decelerate dramatically from 320 km/h to 100 km/h. Turn 3, dubbed Curva de Hortaleza after the nearby district, starts a stretch of public roads through Ribera de Sena street.

Turn 5 and 6 will present another overtaking hotspot, featuring a heavy braking chicane underneath a motorway overpass. Drivers will then ascend the Subida de las Carcavas — an 8% gradient climb — before reaching El Bunker, a tight right-hand corner built next to Spanish Civil War fortifications.

From there, the circuit transitions onto a purpose-built track at the former Mad Cool festival grounds in Valdebebas. High-speed Turns 10 and 11 sweep downhill before the headline feature, La Monumental.

This high-banked right-hander, boasting a 24% incline, channels inspiration from Zandvoort’s iconic Luyendyk corner and is expected to provide spectacular visuals for fans, with grandstands planned to accommodate 45,000 spectators.

The track’s final sector will snake through the IFEMA convention centre area, providing a street circuit feel before drivers tackle the last complex of corners leading onto the main straight. The final Turn 22, named The Park, pays homage to the adjacent Juan Carlos I Park.

Construction is set to begin in the coming weeks, spearheaded by a joint venture between Spanish construction giant ACCIONA and France’s Eiffage Construction. The ambitious project aims to have the circuit race-ready for September 2026.

Initially, Madrid will share the Spanish Grand Prix slot with Barcelona, before becoming the exclusive host from 2027 onward, marking a major shift in F1’s landscape in Spain.
