Logan Sargeant details behind-the-scenes Williams talks amid Antonelli rumours

Logan Sargeant's F1 future had looked in doubt for Imola with Mercedes reportedly wanting to replace him with Andrea Kimi Antonelli

Logan Sargeant believes his future at Williams and in Formula 1 isn’t in immediate danger and dismissed rumours that his team or Mercedes could push Andrea Kimi Antonelli to replace him ahead of the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.

Aged just 17, the precocious Antonelli has already been a serial winner in karts and cars and made the unusual step of skipping F3 to make his F2 debut in 2024, holding his own against Prema teammate Oliver Bearman so far.

Drivers must be 18 to appear race in an official F1 session but Mercedes have requested the FIA waive that requirement for their junior, fuelling rumours that the Bologna-born star could replace Sargeant at Imola, but the American is instead set to continue at Williams a fortnight after a promising Miami GP.

“I think at the end of the day, you have to worry about yourself and it’s all rumors. I know more what’s going on behind the scenes – that I’m comfortable for now and I’m going do my best to keep improving,” Sargeant told select members of the press, including Total-Motorsport.com.

“At the moment I’m just looking at the near races, the near three or four rounds, take it from there and if there is a problem, I’m sure I’ll find out about it first. It sounds boring, but just try to keep improving round after round and I’m just glad I was able to make that step and try to continue it this weekend.”

Sargeant unfussed by Albon extension

One major change has occurred at Williams since Miami – though not the one many expected – as Alex Albon confirmed he’s staying in Grove by signing a multi-year contract extension.

Sargeant outqualified Albon for the first time in their 29 races together as teammates – for the Miami sprint – and finished ahead of him in the shorter race too.

While he couldn’t repeat that in grand prix qualifying or the main race, Sargeant hailed it as a step forward and denied Albon‘s extension is any indication of his own future.

“I wouldn’t say we’re linked in that in that way at all,” Sargeant added. “So I’m just worried about continuing to improve. I think Miami was a great step in the right direction in that sense and looking forward to, trying to improve on that here, in Monaco, in the near future.

“I did at Miami, here he has an upgrade that I don’t have so it’s obviously tough to keep making steps forward without those things but nonetheless I’ll do my best to keep delivering, get the most out of the package and hopefully that’s close, if not better.”
