Miami GP 2024 Sprint Race Updates

Drive-through penalty for Lewis Hamilton!

Hamilton gets a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit-lane! That’s over 20 seconds added to his race time, dumping him out of the points allowing Yuki Tsunoda to inherit the final spot. Double points for RB!

Far from happy with his car, but still victorious anyway, as Max Verstappen leads home Charles Leclerc by three seconds to claim the latest win of his career and in an ominous warning to the rest of the grid of just how far ahead he and Red Bull are.

Third came Sergio Perez, then Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, Oscar Piastri, Nico Hulkenberg and Lewis Hamilton to close out the sprints points.

LAP 19/19: Hamilton gets the last point as Ricciardo survives

Hamilton finally passes Tsunoda to get the last sprint point as Daniel Ricciardo holds on to finish an incredible fourth ahead of Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri in what turned out to be a dramatic race.

LAP 18/19: Daniel Ricciardo continues to impress

The Australian has done spectacularly throughout this race to repel the attempts from Carlos Sainz to overtake him with a mastery in defensive driving that’s on the limit and fair.

This would be huge points for the RB team although it could turn sour if Sainz gets through as Oscar Piastri’s McLaren is also right behind.

Verstappen leads by three seconds.

LAP 17/19: Hamilton fights Tsunoda

After surviving Magnussen’s attempts to destroy the floor of his Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton is now firmly on the back of Yuki Tsunoda and he will get a couple of chances to attack the RB come the end of the race.

Will he be able to get the last sprint point as they squabble over eighth?

Kevin Magnussen needs to be disqualified

The Haas car has constantly made sure he left Hamilton no room, even crashing into him a few times, as he bids to repeat his Saudi Arabian GP exploits by providing a buffer to Nico Hulkenberg.

This is something that should have been feared for a while as a tactical weapon and it’s anything but racing, and so far all he has is a small time penalty and a black and white flag but it cannot buy Hamilton back the time he lost throughout the race.

LAP 8/19: Not much happening right now

Miami hasn’t been known for creating classic races and right now the only thing that’s happened for a few laps is Lewis Hamilton just had a look at Kevin Magnussen, who made sure he left no room.

LAP 5/19: Perez throws it up the inside of Ricciardo

That was definitely a statement from the Mexican as he throws his Red Bull up the inside of the RB. They’re both fighting for Perez’s future seat in 2025 and now Ricciardo has to defend from Carlos Sainz…

LAP 4/19: GREEN FLAG: Ricciardo up to third!

Daniel Ricciardo instantly jumps Sergio Perez at the safety car restart to take one of the podium places as his fine weekend continues, what a moment for the Aussie!

Both Haas cars occupy the points too, that could be massive in the constructors’ championship.

Verstappen still leads as DRS is enabled.

LAP 3/19: Amateur from F1’s veterans

Both Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton completely lost their bearings as they went too deep into Turn 1. The Mercedes did cause the contact in the end, but Alonso would have hit Stroll anyway.

The younger drivers, Stroll and Norris, were very unfortunate bystanders. There will be no further investigation.

LAP 2/19: Stroll out too

Lance Stroll’s damage, from an accident that wasn’t his fault, means he has to retire. Disappointing after a great qualifying for him. Alonso is now running in 18th too.

Esteban Ocon serves his 10-second time penalty under the safety car.

SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED: Lando Norris is out

After throwing a way a chance for pole position on Friday, Lando Norris finds himself out of the race after a four-car contact involving Lewis Hamilton, Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso too.

Very unfortunate for the McLaren driver.

LAP 1/19: Verstappen leads Leclerc

They all get away well at the front and Max Verstappen keeps his place ahead of the Ferrari after putting on a squeeze. In turn, Leclerc runs Perez off to edge of the track!

Meanwhile Lando Norris is OUT after a contact at Turn 2.

The formation lap is underway!

Here are the tyre compounds everyone is running today. Charles Leclerc is going aggressive…

The race is moments away

Miami has a series of long straights making them perfect for slip streaming, will someone be able to make a move on Verstappen throughout the early laps?

What is the grid for Formula 1’s Miami GP Sprint Race?

Verstappen took pole and he was completely surprised at that fact, but where does everyone else line up as they bid to hunt him down?

30 minutes to go!

Formula 1 is back with another Sprint Race as Max Verstappen bids to extend his championship lead over Sergio Perez by collecting an extra eight points to his seasonal tally.

Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc starting in second is bidding for his first race victory in any capacity since the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix after an excellent lap with limited preparation time saw him outqualify his teammate by 0.350.

Sergio Perez in third looks to boost his Red Bull seat credentials, as does Daniel Ricciardo in fourth. Elsewhere, both Mercedes cars are looking at damage limitation after a double-SQ2 exit on Friday.

The 2024 Formula 1 season continues with the Miami Grand Prix which is an F1 Sprint weekend and they’re into the Sprint Race after just an hour of free practice to get accustomed to the Miami International Autodrome.

Miami GP 2024 Pirelli Tyre Info

The Miami International Autodrome‘s design, with its combination of high-speed straights and technical sections, tests both driver skill and car performance meaning it’s an even bigger challenge after such little preparation time.

The weather could play a significant role in the session’s dynamics. Miami’s climate in May can be unpredictable, with possibilities of sudden rain showers that could impact the track conditions and force teams to adjust their strategies accordingly.

As the drivers take to the track, all eyes will be on the top contenders like Max Verstappen, who has shown strong performances in previous races, to see if they can maintain their momentum or if rivals will close the gap.

Also, any new technological adjustments by teams like Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes will be scrutinised to gauge their impact on the performance hierarchy established earlier in the season.
