Verstappen fastest

And with the session coming to an end, Verstappen puts in the best time of the season a full 0.288s ahead of Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez, and almost four tenths up on Russell in the Mercedes.

Albon out on softs

As we go into the qualifying runs, Albon is out on track with soft tyres on and jumps to sixth position with is time.

Long runs

Thus far teams have shunned qualifying pace in favour of doing long runs – likely due to yesterday’s lack of running. – but with less than 20 minutes to go, we should see the times tumbling in Suzuka.

Bradley Lord, Mercedes Comms Director: “George went straight out on the medium and straight onto a long run, it’s all a bit traffic disrupted and obviously the track is improving. Both will go out on softs late on and see how that shakes out time-wise.

“They are pretty similar on set-up, they generally run reasonably close on set-up and there haven’t been any big changes from yesterday as they were both happy with the car balance.”

Aston Martin upgrades

Both cars are now fitted with the upgrades – revised side pods, new floor and floor edge. Let’s see if they make a difference on performance.

Ricciardo off

Ricciardo spins at Turn 2 after a bit of a twitch mid-corner. But he gets going and is back on track.

Williams issues

After Logan Sargeant’s crash on Friday, Alex Albon sends an ominous message on team radio, “I just have zero confidence in the car.”

Hamilton with early pace

Lewis Hamilton goes fastest with a 1:30.193, ahead of both Red Bull cars by 0.128s and 0.388s, but the Mercedes set that time on a soft tyre, while Verstappen and Perez did their time on mediums.

Qualifying simulations

Since we are just one session away from Qualifying, teams usually concentrate on one lap pace in FP3.
