This session offers a first glimpse into the teams’ preparations and strategies, setting a crucial groundwork for the race weekend.

With its unique mix of high-speed straights and tight corners, the circuit poses a formidable challenge to the drivers. The Chinese Grand Prix is back after five years away from the F1 calendar and offers a strategic complexity magnified by the fact it’s the first F1 Sprint weekend of the 2024 season.

Teams will be particularly focused on optimising their aerodynamic setups and tyre selections during this initial practice session, as they seek to balance speed with the high tyre degradation typically observed on this track.

Moreover, this session is critical for drivers to acclimatise to the track conditions and fine-tune their vehicles’ performance. Observers will be keen to see how the returning drivers and teams alike adapt to the pressures of the circuit.

Stay connected for real-time updates, detailed analysis, and comprehensive coverage directly from the track as the drama of the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix begins to unfold. Keep this page refreshed for live updates, lap times, and insights as FP1 unfolds, marking the start of what is sure to be an electrifying Sprint weekend of motorsport in China.

F1 2024 Chinese GP LIVE – Latest FP1 Updates

And we go green again

That red flag period was short after the fire was put out and we go back to on track action.

Red Flag

The grass is on fire by the apex of Turn 7!!

No Ferrari

It’s intriguing that the Ferrari drivers are still in the pits while most of the grid has already started gathering data and adapting to the Shanghai circuit. This could suggest a strategic decision by Ferrari, possibly taking a bit more time to fine-tune settings based on the initial feedback from other teams or even waiting to see if the track conditions improve.

For Logan Sargeant, making his first F1 appearance at this track, getting out there and logging as many laps as possible is crucial. Every lap will help him get more comfortable with the circuit’s challenges and refine his driving strategy

Cars on track

That single hour of practice in Shanghai becomes a critical period for teams and drivers, especially those who are less familiar with the track or need to refine their setups based on the latest conditions and any updates they’ve brought to their cars. With such limited time before Sprint Qualifying, every minute on the track is invaluable.

The immediate rush in the pit lane as the lights go green illustrates the urgency. Teams are eager to get as much data and feedback as possible. Drivers will need to quickly adapt to the circuit’s unique features, like its long back straight and the demanding snail-shaped first corner, which tests both car balance and driver skill.

Sprint weekend

The revised format for the Sprint weekend seems designed to inject even more excitement into the event. Starting with Free Practice 1 (FP1) to get everyone dialed in, followed by the crucial Sprint Qualifying, really sets the tone for a dynamic weekend.

The Sprint Race itself taking place first on Saturday adds an interesting strategic layer, as teams will have to balance their immediate performance in the Sprint with preparations for the qualifying session for the main race later that day.

Then, with the Grand Prix on Sunday, there’s plenty at stake following the results from the previous day’s Sprint and Qualifying sessions. Are there any particular aspects of this new format or any team strategies you’re keen to keep an eye on?

Good morning

Hello! It sounds like an exciting return for the Formula 1 Shanghai Grand Prix after a long hiatus. Overcast skies could add an interesting dynamic to the practice session, possibly affecting track conditions and strategies. Are you following any specific teams or drivers this weekend, or do you have any particular questions or updates you’re interested in about the event?
