Welcome to Total-Motorsport.com’s F1 live blog for the 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint Race at Interlagos, as McLaren laid down the gauntlet with a sensational lockout of the starting grid which sees Oscar Piastri leading Lando Norris.
Norris had led in SQ1 and SQ2, appearing set to clinch pole before Piastri’s last-minute push placed him at the top, highlighting McLaren’s strong one-lap pace. Charles Leclerc is third for Ferrari, followed by Max Verstappen in fourth, who is keen to continue his Sprint victory streak.
This year’s event at Interlagos introduces a significant variable: a completely resurfaced 4.309km track, including the pit lane. The new asphalt, thoroughly cleaned to remove the typical sheen of fresh bitumen, presents an unknown factor for teams and drivers.
Interlagos has hosted 40 Grand Prix, and circuit is known for its overtaking opportunities and unpredictable weather, often leading to Safety Car deployments. Alain Prost holds the record for the most wins in Brazil with six, though only one was at Interlagos. Michael Schumacher leads at this circuit with four victories.

After all, he didn’t actually overtake or get ahead of Oscar Piastri. What do you make of the drama at Interlagos?
Lando Norris reflects on 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint Race victory
Lando Norris was handed the win by his McLaren colleague after looking like he barely had the pace to stay ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen at times.
So how does he feel after collecting a win served to him on a silver platter by his younger Australian colleague?
“Not proud about it,” Norris told F1 TV of the victory. “But we worked well as a team together, so I thank Oscar.
“We’ve done a great job as a team. Today was the result that we wanted. Oscar deserved it, but we did what we had to do.
“So I thank him and the team. We had great pace, so looking forward to qualifying and the race tomorrow.”
Oscar Piastri reacts to the McLaren performance
Oscar Piastri dominated the F1 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint Race before being forced to surrender the win to Lando Norris.
So how does the Australian McLaren driver feel about that? He actually chose not to speak about it, although he tips the team for a good remainder of the weekend at Interlagos.
“A great day from the team. A lot of points,” Piastri told F1 TV after the Sprint. “I think we learned a lot for the race tomorrow as well.
“The Ferrari was quick at the start and Max at the end. I think we have a few things to improve but we are in decent shape.”
Max Verstappen tips a stronger weekend for Red Bull
Despite being under investigation, Max Verstappen said he’s encouraged by Red Bull’s progress and celebrated a solid result in the F1 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint Race – stewards’ decision pending.
So how did he feel about his race?
“It was quite a tricky race,” Verstappen told F1 TV. “But I think the pace was very good because we could always follow within the DRS, and I’m quite pleased with that.
“It was promising, it was good. This is race pace. Tomorrow it might rain as well, so there are a lot of unknowns, but today was good.
“I still expect them (McLaren) to be really quick over one lap but I hope we can limit the damage a bit with the five-place grid penalty I have.”
MAX VERSTAPPEN NOTED BY RACE CONTROL
Max Verstappen has been flagged by race control for a potential virtual safety car infringement, which could be because the world champion appeared to restart the race too early.
That could be a five or 10-second penalty for the world champion, it will be an open/shut case if the stewards decide to punish him. It’s officially under investigation.
LANDO NORRIS WINS THE BRAZILIAN GP SPRINT RACE
A bizarre strategy eventually sees Lando Norris let through by Oscar Piastri with the risk of a safety car, just moments before the virtual safety car was deployed for Nico Hulkenberg’s engine failure.
Piastri had the race under complete control but eventually complied and allowed the title hopeful through to claim two more points to reduce the gap to Max Verstappen down to 45 points ahead of the F1 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint Race as the Dutchman finished third.
Charles Leclerc finished fourth ahead of Carlos Sainz, George Russell, Pierre Gasly and Sergio Perez in the top eighth.
Lap 24/24: Verstappen almost passes Piastri
Max Verstappen gets too eager as he tries to pass Oscar Piastri into Turn 4 just before the VSC formally ends and goes green.
That lets the McLaren just evade the clutches of the Red Bull.
Lap 23/24: Virtual Safety Car deployed
The Virtual Safety Car is deployed and that means Lando Norris will win the F1 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint Race.
The VSC was caused by Nico Hulkenberg’s engine failure in the Haas.
Lap 22/24: MCLARENS SWAP POSITION
Oscar Piastri’s lead of the race comes to an end as Lando Norris finally is let through with the risk of a safety car in the late stages of the Brazilian GP Sprint Race.
“Thanks mate,” says his engineer.
Lap 21/24: Nico Hulkenberg OUT
Nico Hulkenberg’s engine has gone in the Haas and that means the afternoon is over for the German.
There are currently yellow flags, could that become a safety car?
Lap 20/24: Verstappen slightly adrift
Max Verstappen now seems to have lost touch to Lando Norris, who has DRS on Oscar Piastri. The McLarens should be safe for the win.
Sergio Perez finally gets past Liam Lawson into Turn 1 for eighth place but the Kiwi makes a very late move. That was on the very limit.
Lap 18/24: Verstappen finally third
Max Verstappen finally gets past Charles Leclerc into third position and now he needs to find an extra three tenths to get a run on Lando Norris, his title rival, in the McLaren ahead.
“Come on Max, let’s chase him down,” says Gianpiero Lambiase. Could we see some fireworks between the championship contenders soon?
Lap 17/24: McLaren plan revealed
McLaren tell Lando Norris they will swap positions on the final lap of the race as the Brit warns he will overtake anyway.
Piastri, however, just set the fastest lap of the Sprint Race at Interlagos.
Lap 16/24: Mistake by Verstappen
Charles Leclerc is struggling but gets a reprieve as Max Verstappen goes wide into Turn 1 and allows him to scamper off down the road, although he’s not out of DRS to the Dutchman yet.
It’s a rare error from the world champion.
Lap 15/24: Lawson and Perez fighting
Sergio Perez briefly gets past Liam Lawson before the Kiwi fights back against the Red Bull at Interlagos.
They’re effectively duelling for the spot next to Max Verstappen for the 2025 season.
Lap 14/24: First quiet lap of the race
For once, nothing happens at Interlagos as the lead four simpyl hold position and extend their gap to Carlos Sainz in fifth.
The Spaniard is four seconds behind this group and has a safe buffer to George Russell’s Mercedes behind.
Lap 13/24: Leclerc fights off Verstappen
Max Verstappen’s all over Charles Leclerc on the run down to Turn 4 and the Ferrari just manages to fend the Red Bull off.
Will the McLarens swap the positions now?
Lap 12/24: Norris under pressure again
Lando Norris had dropped out of DRS and had to repel Charles Leclerc’s charge into Turn 1 before Oscar Piastri hands him the straight-line speed boost once again.
This is a strange plan from McLaren that seems destined to fail, if we’re being honest.
Lap 10/24: Some team orders from McLaren
McLaren tell Oscar Piastri to give Lando Norris DRS, but not to give him the lead of the race.
It’s a strange one from the team at the moment.
Lap 9/24: Perez up to 10th
Sergio Perez dives down the inside of Nico Hulkenberg into Turn 4 and the Red Bull is now up to 10th.
Remember that points are paid out to drivers only finishing eighth and up, so the Mexican has a bit more work to do.
Lap 8/24: Norris: “Yeah whatever”
Lando Norris isn’t too happy with the fact that he’s dropped out of DRS and McLaren haven’t given him the lead of the race.
“Yeah whatever,” is his radio when his engineer tells him the team has a plan.
Lap 7/24: Verstappen comes back into it
Max Verstappen backed off for a lap or two but now he’s coming back into the picture as he begins to attack Charles Leclerc again.
Norris makes a huge mistake and loses DRS! He’s at risk from the two cars behind him! What are McLaren doing?
Lap 5/24: Leclerc into the front three battle
Charles Leclerc has now got himself into DRS range of Lando Norris whilst Max Verstappen has dropped just out of range.
Norris subtly asks for team orders but so far there is no change as of yet.
Replay of Lap 1: Verstappen locked up
Max Verstappen was a bit too eager into Turn 1 and he locked up, unable to make the move stick.
Fortunately he didn’t hit anyone as Lewis Hamilton had to back out further down the grid on the outside and lost positions.
Lap 3/24: Verstappen almost passes Leclerc
Max Verstappen forces Charles Leclerc to defend the inside line into Turn 1 but despite the better exit speed from the Senna Esses, he can’t make the move into Turn 4.
The McLarens aren’t far away from each other, Norris remains within half a second of his teammate.
Lap 2/24: DRS enabled
DRS has been enabled but it isn’t quite enough for Max Verstappen to get a run on Charles Leclerc as Sergio Perez takes the place from Franco Colapinto.
Piastri leads by half a second.
LIGHTS OUT: Lap 1/24: Piastri holds the lead
It’s a great start by Oscar Piastri who defends the inside and holds the lead into Turn 1 as Max Verstappen’s lunge on Charles Leclerc doesn’t quite work out, the world champion is running fourth still.
Will Piastri swap the position?
Formation lap begins
We are moments away from lights out as Oscar Piastri kicks off the formation lap.
Who will win the F1 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint Race?
All cars on the mediums
All of the grid have chosen the medium tyres to kick off the F1 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint Race and they don’t have to make a pitstop.
That means we will see them push flatout from lights to flag and hopefully have some excellent duels.
3 minutes to go: Cryptic from Piastri
Oscar Piastri doesn’t say he’s allowed to fight Lando Norris for the win, but he doesn’t not say he’s allowed to either.
“Let’s see,” are the words of the Australian when asked by Sky Sports F1. Will he defy his McLaren teammate again?
8 minutes to go: Can Max Verstappen win?
Max Verstappen is clinging onto his F1 championship lead, somehow, so can he manage to upset the odds once again in the Brazilian GP Sprint Race?
“It depends on our pace,” Verstappen told Sky Sports F1. “Over one lap we were too slow.
“I hope we can be competitive now in this Sprint.”
15 minutes to go: Are you ready?
The drivers are heading to the grid. The crowd is gathering. Everyone is locked in for this intriguing F1 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint Race.

16 years ago Lewis Hamilton made that overtake on Toyota’s Timo Glock to snatch the F1 world title from under the nose of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa.

Pirelli tyre compounds for 2024 Brazilian GP
Pirelli has opted for softer tire compounds than last year, bringing the C3 (Hard), C4 (Medium), and C5 (Soft) to Brazil. The combination of new asphalt and limited practice time—due to the Sprint weekend format—adds complexity to tyre management and car setup.
The track’s 15 anticlockwise corners exert medium to low forces on the tires, evenly distributed across both axles. The fresh surface may lead to faster lap times, increasing tyre stress.

When does 2024 Brazilian GP Sprint start?
The Sprint Race at the 2024 Brazilian GP begins at 2:00pm for F1 fans in the UK. On the US east coast the action starts at 10:00am ET, with those on the west coast having an 7:00am PT start.
For F1 fans Down Under, it’s an early 1:00am start in Australia, on Sunday morning.
