Lewis Hamilton sends message to Ferrari over hiring Adrian Newey

Hamilton could link up with Newey at Ferrari after the Red Bull designer's departure was made official

-

Lewis Hamilton has confessed he would jump at the chance to work with Adrian Newey at Ferrari in 2025, after Red Bull announced their chief engineering officer is leaving the Formula 1 team.

Red Bull announced Newey would be stepping back from his role in the second quarter of 2025, which means he could be snapped up by their rivals once he has finished working on their RB17 Hypercar.

Ferrari are reportedly leading the chase to recruit the 65-year-old, with a meeting reportedly taking place between Newey and Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur in London this week. Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin are also thought to be options for the veteran designer as he weighs up his future.

The opportunity work alongside Hamilton in 2025 at Ferrari’s Maranello base may be the most attractive option on the table. And the 39-year-old gave his stamp of approval to the Scuderia if they manage to secure his signature.

Ahead of the 2024 Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, Hamilton was asked during the driver’s press conference if he would like to work with Newey at Ferrari next year – and his response was somewhat unambiguous: “Very much.”

Hamilton then added: “Adrian’s known for [having] such a great history, a great track record. He’s just done an amazing job through his career. engaging with teams and the knowledge he has. I think he’d be an amazing addition.”

Hamilton hails Newey’s influence

Newey has been influential in Red Bull’s success since they joined F1 in 2005, playing a major role in designing the cars that won the drivers’ championship seven times between 2010 and 2013, and again from 2021 to 2023.

The Briton is widely recognised the most innovative designer in the motorsport’s history, and his design for the RB19 ensured the Austrian team completed the most dominant season in F1 history with 21 wins from 22 races.

Hamilton praised Newey’s work after claiming they have built on their car’s pace from 2023, but the seven-time world champion he doesn’t think that Red Bull will suffer too much from Newey’s departure.

“They’ve already got a great team, they’ve made huge progress, great strides forward, the car is quicker this year,” Hamilton added. “It would a privilege to work with him.”
