Lewis Hamilton: My Mercedes chapter isn’t finished despite Ferrari move

Lewis Hamiton finished in third in the 2023 F1 drivers' championship despite Mercedes rarely having the second-fastest car

Lewis Hamilton re-iterated he’ll remain completely focussed on Mercedes throughout the 2024 season despite agreeing to join Ferrari from 2025, and gave his first feedback on the W15 at Formula 1 testing.

Hamilton signed a multi-year deal at Maranello which will take him into the new era of F1 from 2026, and was reportedly offered a blank cheque to lure him away from the setup he’s been part of for 26 years.

He’ll replace Carlos Sainz at Ferrari, who look like they have the best case to be the second-fastest team in 2024 F1 testing, and it was the first time Hamilton‘s spoken to the media about the move.

“This chapter is still not finished, and it’s still 100% focused on doing the best for this team this year and trying to finish on the high,” Hamilton told journalists in Bahrain.

“That’s a big, big goal for me and the team and I have absolute faith in everything, everyone in the team. And I think what we’ve done so far is great so I really hope that we are able to close to Red Bull somehow.”

Hamilton: W15 is a work in progress

Hamilton believes Mercedes have improved from 2023, but added Red Bull remain a step ahead of the rest of the field – which is the consensus across the rest of the grid.

Hamilton drove for the whole of day two in Bahrain, completing the third-most laps of any driver and finishing third in the timesheets behind Sergio Perez and leader Sainz.

He was over a second behind the Spaniard though, and just a couple of tenths ahead of fourth-placed Lando Norris with the running order behind Red Bull still unclear.

“It’s a work in progress, it’s definitely improved,” Hamilton added. “I think everyone has so we’re just going through the same sequence as everyone. The cars are still stiff and bumpy as we know, this generation of car. But the team have done a great job over the winter.

“Yesterday was a good day and felt much more enjoyable to drive. I think we still also have time to find, Red Bull are out in the distance. But I think it’s a good platform to work from this year.”
