Lewis Hamilton: Las Vegas will never match Silverstone

Lewis Hamilton has taken six Grand Prix victories in the USA for McLaren and Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton stressed he’s still excited for the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix despite admitting The Strip Circuit doesn’t look exciting and will never be like Silverstone on the Formula 1 calendar.

It’s the third Grand Prix of the season in the USA after Max Verstappen triumphed at both Miami and the Circuit of the Americas, and is the odds-on favourite to complete a historic hat-trick in Las Vegas.

Mercedes don’t expect to be competitive at the high-speed circuit, but Hamilton saw the positives of the event and remains open-minded.

“It is a big show for sure,” Hamilton told the media. “And it’s never going to be like Silverstone, but maybe over time the people in the community here will grow to love the sport just as we’ve had the privilege of growing up and experiencing.

“Maybe the track will be good, maybe it’ll be bad. It was so-so on the sim, it’s definitely not Silverstone but I think don’t knock it until you try it.”

F1 has thrown everything at organising the Las Vegas GP and it’s expected to be one of the sport’s most lucrative races, with its contract extended to a decade well before a wheel has been turned in anger on The Strip.

Hamilton took his second-ever grand prix victory at Indianapolis in 2007, but the world’s most influential country then took a five-year hiatus from F1 until Austin instantly became one of the most popular races on the calendar from 2012.

Hamilton‘s taken five wins in Texas and only finished one race off the podium once in 11 attempts, but added America needed more races. Miami has also been on the calendar since 2022, but as a diluted version of F1‘s original vision that’s so far failed to inspire or entertain.

“The sport continues to grow, it is a business ultimately and I think you’ll still see good racing here,” Hamilton added. “It’s just such a big country. I think to really tap into the market here and really captivate the audience here, we needed to have at least two races.

“One wasn’t enough, and this is one of the most iconic cities there is and unique cities that they have here, amongst the other amazing cities they have in America, all the lights, the show.”
