Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes have already had several wins in Formula 1 in the 2023 season despite the Red Bull cars winning every race so far in the campaign
The Brit has had to change his perspective on the sport now that he is no longer driving the completely dominant car on the grid but instead scrapping for the final spot on the podium.
Hamilton has twice finished second in 2023 (Australia and Spain) but sees other things away from outright results as victories for the team who are trying to return to the top of the pile.
“We’ve been through a tough patch but now we’re kind of on the up,” Hamilton told the media ahead of the Canadian GP.
“Some of the races feel like we’ve had wins, it’s just about perspective. Of course, we haven’t been in first place, but there have been many wins and steps we’ve taken.
“Last race for us to be on the podium with both drivers was a win for us, we have that North Star, we know where we need to go and together we can get there.”
Max has had an incredible career
Hamilton holds the record for wins and pole positions in F1 and he claimed the latter in Canada in 2017, surpassing Ayrton Senna.
Max Verstappen can equal Senna’s 41 F1 wins this weekend and Hamilton expects the reigning champion to go way beyond that tally this season.
“Being five years old and watching with my dad, the dream was to be like Ayrton,” Hamilton added. “It’s ultimately unfair because there are a lot more races in our time.
“It was still a real honour and I think they gave me a helmet or something like that which was very cool.
“Max has been doing an amazing job and he’s had an incredible career so far. He’s for sure going to pass that.”
