Lewis Hamilton critical of Red Bull boss Christian Horner: He doesn’t enjoy winning anymore

Red Bull have won all but one of the races in F1 2023 season

-

Lewis Hamilton believes that given Red Bull have won so many races Team Principal Christian Horner is are bored of their success after their latest victory at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix, their 20th of the season.

Red Bull‘s ruthless domination of the F1 season means they now lead the constructors’ championship by 430 points – amassing 822 points in total ahead of the 2023 Abu Dhabi GP – which is more than double the total of second-place Mercedes.

As a result, Hamilton thinks that radio messages to Max Verstappen from Horner, show that he’s no longer enjoying that winning feeling as much and believes that’s applicable to the wider Red Bull team.

“When you have so much success, no matter how hard you try it’s hard to keep things in perspective,” Hamilton said to Channel 4. “I even hear it in Christian Horner’s voice when Max [Verstappen] wins, he doesn’t know what to say he’s like, ‘Here we go again. Good job, Max. Good job’.”

Red Bull are in the midst of the most dominant season in F1 history having taken victory in 95% of the races prior to the Abu Dhabi GP weekend, which puts them 1.25% above McLaren’s 1988 season and 5% above the height of Mercedes domination in 2016.

Hamilton preparing for the top step

Hamilton is currently winless since the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP, marking a run of 43 races without taking to the top step of the podium. It’s led to people questioning whether he will bother to remain in the sport after such an illustrious career.

But he says his motivation isn’t going anywhere yet, after signing a two-year extension with Mercedes.

“You approach every year exactly the same. Still prepare myself, still train,” Hamilton said. “If anything, you deep dive a bit more, you try to pay attention to more.

“I think through adversity and through this experience for two years, I feel like I’ve learned a huge amount as a driver – not necessarily on track but particularly off track in terms of how I engage with everyone and I like to think that’s a real positive.

“The excitement goes, but when you first get that win it’s amazing. But if you have it all the time [it’s not the same]. Of course, I want to win again. I do feel like when we do win again, the feeling is going to be even greater because everyone’s struggled.”

When is the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

It’s almost time for the curtains to close on the 2023 F1 season, with a few things still to be settled and put to bed in the United Arab Emirates such as whether Ferrari will catch Mercedes to finish second in the constructors’ championship or not.

The Abu Dhabi takes place this weekend – November 24-26 – with the race starting at 17:00 local time, which is 13:00 in the UK. F1 fans in the USA will be able to see the race from Yas Marina at 08:00 EST, and 05:00 PST.
