Norris admits mistakes as F1 title aspirations take another blow at 2025 Chinese GP

The Brit abandoned his final lap in qualifying, relegating him to third on the grid for Sunday

Lando Norris admits to making more mistakes at the 2025 Chinese GP as he watches his Formula 1 title aspirations take a blow with Oscar Piastri on pole at the Shanghai International Circuit in the sister McLaren.

A poor Sprint Qualifying saw the British racer start from sixth and then a bad start and unforced error dropped him to ninth, although he eventually recovered to claim a solitary point after passing Lance Stroll.

Fans might have expected the errors from the 25-year-old to then dry up, but that proved to be the opposite as more gremlins crept into his driving in Grand Prix qualifying as he was ultimately forced to abandon his own lap.

That means Norris is poised to lose 10 points to Piastri as things stand, as the 2025 Australian GP winner is set to see his F1 title aspirations take another blow at this Chinese GP weekend in Asia with more mistakes.

“I think Oscar’s shown great pace,” Norris told members of the media, including Total-Motorsport.com. “I definitely haven’t—especially from the race pace.

“And whenever we struggle with front graining, it’s something I just struggle with a lot personally. So [it’s] difficult for me. It’s been therefore a difficult weekend, just trying to deal with those things.

“It’s something I’m not strong enough in. But I’ve got a long, long night ahead of me to sit down and go through the data and see what I can improve for tomorrow.”

Why is Lando Norris struggling at the F1 2025 Chinese GP?

Norris has made it no secret that he’s not as happy with the McLaren car as he would like to be, pointing to issues with rear end instability, tyre degradation and even the way he has to brake and attack corners.

And it seems as Woking’s aerodynamicists and engineers push for more and more lap time, the problems become more and more severe for the Brit to handle in a story that threatens to mirror Red Bull’s decline in 2024.

However, he did manage to find the pace in Australia and was broadly error free. So what exactly is going on in Shanghai that’s causing him to lose pace as Norris finds himself struggling at the F1 2025 Chinese GP?

“The layout is very different here to Australia—much more medium-speed, high-speed corners. There’s some slow speed too,” Norris added to members of the media, including Total-Motorsport.com. “That and just the car.

“The car is, I mean, we’ve said it many times, it’s definitely the quickest car, but it’s still tricky to drive. We can easily do good sectors every now and then, but putting a lap together, even like Oscar said, he was two-tenths down and then he’s kind of going for it and it stuck.

“But it seems just tricky to understand how to do it consistently enough. When you do that kind of good job, then it can easily be the quickest car. So a couple of things, and just more my driving—just that rhythm of knowing exactly what to do where, how much.

“Also, when you have the tyres and if you push a bit too much, the tyres can bite quite quickly too. So many different things, but also just Oscar’s done a good job and I’ve not done a perfect job. It’s tight, so I just paid the price for not doing well enough.”
