Lando Norris overjoyed with best ever finish after holding off Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone

Lando Norris finished second at the 2023 British GP

McLaren driver Lando Norris felt his second place in Sunday’s British Grand Prix was his best podium to date in Formula 1.

Norris, who qualified second, got a better start than Max Verstappen and led the opening stages before the reigning world champion swept by to retake command.

With Verstappen out in front, Norris had his mirrors full of Lewis Hamilton during the race’s second half, but the McLaren driver held on to end a podium drought of over a year.

“I’d probably say the best,” said Norris told select members of the press, including “I think your first podium in Formula 1 is always pretty, pretty special, that’s the one you remember forever.

“The team have done a good job, they’ve improved the car. The last few weekends we’ve been extremely good so I’m very happy for them.

“It’s pretty stressful to be here now and be in that position, especially on a day like today with how tricky it was at times, so I’m very, very proud.”

Disappointed for teammate Piastri

Norris may have made the trip to the rostrum, but McLaren could have secured a double podium after Oscar Piastri narrowly missed out on a debut F1 podium with fourth.

Piastri maintained his starting position of third for half of the race but was undone by a pit stop just before the safety car came out in response to Kevin Magnussen’s Haas stopping on track.

A chain reaction of pit stops followed where Piastri lost out third, but the Australian could stay within a second of Hamilton at the chequered flag.

I feel for him, to be honest, said Norris. “He should be sitting here if things went to plan and there wasn’t a safety car.

“So it’s a bit of a shame he deserves his first podium in F1, and it would have been amazing for us as McLaren, celebrating our 60th anniversary with the chrome livery.

“To share it would have been pretty special, he deserved it, he’s been on top form all weekend.”

Where is the next F1 2023 race?

With the F1 circus finished at Silverstone, we move on to the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, which will be held at the Hungaroring, Budapest, over the weekend of July 21-23.
