Lance Stroll reveals danger drivers faced in scorching heat of Qatar GP

Stroll gave his take on the sweltering conditions endured by the drivers in the Qatar desert.

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll has revealed the sheer danger that the heat that was present during the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix posed to drivers.

Stroll endured a tough race, but managed to keep his car on track until the very end, where he crossed the line in 11th place, as three time champion Max Verstappen and Red Bull took the victory once again.

Throughout the weekend, drivers were complaining about the tense and borderline dangerous heat on track and in the cars, with Logan Sargeant eventually retiring from the race after struggling with the conditions.

After the Grand Prix, Stroll, speaking to the media, shared his thoughts on a trying and sweaty weekend.

“I was passing out in the car. And they painted the curbs so you can’t even feel the curbs, you’re just trying to see it. But the problem is, you can’t see where you’re going, because you’re passing out. I was fading out,” he said.

When asked if the FIA could possibly look into a way to combat the heat intensity, Stroll replied: “I mean, I don’t know. It’s just a combination of things. Maybe there’s some kind of ventilation system we have to look into for these kind of hot races as the cars are getting stiffer and heavier.

“It’s a smooth track, but you can still feel the stiffness of the cars, when you’re riding over curbs and I think that’s a big part of the physicality, you know, the ride of these cars being so harsh and the G forces being so high that makes it really challenging.

Need to manage hot temperatures

The air temperatures of these types of circuits, coupled with the staggeringly hot track temperature, have a significant impact on a driver sat quite low to the ground, surrounded by a battery, gearbox, and an entire engine emitting heat also.

“I think it’s the whole car that’s just heating up, the whole engine, the chassis and these temperatures. Everything is getting really hot in the car, and it’s not much cooling,” Stroll said.

“[The FIA] should think about going to softer cars, and some kind of ventilation system if we come to these kinds of races with these temperatures, and spend more time in the sun.

“It’s really hot. It was burning.”
