Kevin Magnussen blames Sergio Perez for Lap 1 race-ending Monaco GP crash

The Monaco GP finished early for Kevin Magnussen, Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg's thanks to a first-lap crash

Kevin Magnussen slammed Sergio Perez for the first lap crash that ended both drivers’ afternoons at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix after just two corners, and took the other Haas of Nico Hulkenberg out of the race for good measure.

Magnussen had overtaken Hulkenberg at Sainte Devote and looked to jump Perez heading up the hill, getting his front wheels alongside the rear tyres of the Mexican’s Red Bull on the tight streets of Monte Carlo.

However, Perez drifted right following the racing line and Magnussen refused to bail out before running out of room, spinning the Red Bull into Hulkenberg to send all three for an early debrief.

“From my point of view, I had a good part of my front on Perez’s rear and when he went to the wall I got pushed to the wall and made contact with him”, Magnussen told Sky Sports F1.

“I trusted he was going to leave space for me since I was there, it’s not a corner where you’re braking into it, it’s a bend on the straight so you have to have a car [width] otherwise you leave the other guy no option.

“From my point of view, I was there and I got squeezed to the wall.”

Hulkenberg believes crash was racing incident

While Magnussen refused to back out of the overtaking attempt, Perez also saw Magnussen in his mirrors and cut across anyway, gambling on the tenacious Dane backing out of the move.

The only driver who was certainly blameless was Hulkenberg, who called the incident ‘unnecessary’ over team radio as he came to rest facing his teammate.

“I got hit in the rear axle by Checo who had contact with Kevin, it was a typical lap-one racing accident,” Hulkenberg added. “Two drivers who both didn’t want to bail out and didn’t give enough room on a tight track like Monaco, and I was the unlucky victim there.”
