Japanese Grand Prix weather update: What are racing conditions in Suzuka?

Could the rain mix things up in Suzuka? Here’s an updated weather forecast for the 2024 Japanese GP

-

As the Formula 1 circus gears up for the eagerly awaited 2024 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, all eyes are on the skies to see what part the weather will play in the race.

We have already had a washout in FP2 where rain limited the running to just 13 timed laps, and before the Japanese weekend the chance of precipitation was around 60% for the race itself.

Other than that spell on Friday, the conditions have remained fairly cool and overcast in Suzuka, giving teams consistent data in order to plan their strategy for the Japanese Grand Prix.

With the race starting at 2pm local time in Suzuka, what effect will Japan’s notoriously variable April weather have on the race? Here’s what fans, teams, and drivers can expect from the weather in Suzuka

Suzuka race weather

In Suzuka today, April 7, the weather promises a day of gentle transitions, perfectly suited for spectators and drivers alike. The morning opens with partly cloudy skies, presenting a mild temperature of 17°C that gradually warms to 18°C as the day progresses.

By early afternoon, the skies clear, heralding peak temperatures of around 20°C – ideal conditions for enjoying the outdoors. However, as the afternoon progresses towards evening, the cloud cover increases once again, though the temperatures remain pleasant.

The gentle southeast breeze, starting at a mere 1 m/s, picks up speed throughout the morning, offering a refreshing counter to the increasing warmth. This light breeze evolves into a light to moderate breeze by noon, providing a comfortable atmosphere for any planned events or activities.

The wind strengthens to a moderate breeze from the southeast, reaching speeds of up to 11 km/h, signalling a slightly brisker end to the day. By late afternoon into the evening, temperatures start a gradual decline from 20°C back down to a cooler 16°C under cloudy skies.

  • Forecast: The day is expected to be cloudy with sunny spells throughout the race. Light to moderate SE winds at speeds of around 11km/h are expected.
  • Temperature: A maximum of 20°C is anticipated, with a temperature of around 19°C in the morning before lights out.
  • Precipitation: The chance of rain is minimal at around 5%.
