James Vowles reveals key advice given to Logan Sargeant ahead of 2024 F1 season

Logan Sargeant is under pressure to keep his Williams seat beyond 2024 this year

Williams team principal James Vowles has called upon Logan Sargeant to surprise the world ahead of his second Formula 1 season.

After finishing third in the 2022 Formula 2 championship, Sargeant was promoted to a Williams seat alongside Alex Albon for 2023. But the American struggled for results and only managed a solitary point finish in his rookie season with 10th at the United States Grand Prix.

However, despite rumours he would be replaced at season’s end, Williams retained Sargeant for 2024 where he will once again partner Albon.

“First and foremost, I’ve asked him to surprise the world in terms of his physical performance, his approach and his performance,” Vowles told selected media outlets, including Total-Motorsport.com.

“We’ve changed quite a bit with him across this winter period. His trainer’s different, his training mechanisms and programmes are completely different. You should see he’s very much a more confident person and he carries that well.

“What I’ve asked him to do is there will be a reset. It’s very hard for racing drivers across this period when they finish the last race in early December and then start again in late February to be on the money straightaway he won’t be.

“What I’ve asked him to do is to approach the first few days of driving the car with caution again, the same way he did at the end of the year, build up to it, don’t try and rush into success and don’t be disappointed if success doesn’t come to you immediately it will do. That’s the confidence I placed in him that’s why he’s back in the car.

“And that openness to it, that discussion even provides him with an arena where he knows he can start pushing himself and the team around him in order to get success out of it.”

Sargeant’s late-season struggles due to a lack of spare parts

Despite scoring points in Austin, Sargeant‘s confidence took a knock in the second half of 2023 after a crash in qualifying for the Japanese GP and a spin in the Sprint at the Qatar GP.

The incidents, along with Willams shifting focus to 2024 earlier in the season, forced Sargeant to use an older spec of car compared to Albon, enhancing the gap between him and his teammate.

There were however glimpses of potential from Sargeant near the end of 2023, as he managed to qualify seventh for November’s Las Vegas GP. He was later promoted to sixth as Carlos Sainz was given a 10-place grid penalty for changing power unit components after running over a manhole cover in FP1.

“At the end of the year, I was pretty open about this – midway through the year, his car wasn’t in the same specs as Alex,” explained Vowles.

“We were running out of bits because I was putting our focus into 2024 I didn’t want to spend time building new bits I wanted to spend time building next year’s success.

“The result of that is that he was slightly down on performance. At the end of the year, in the same equipment, he started to fall right back into where I needed them to be, and what I’ve asked him to do [is] that momentum needs to continue.

“I need him now over the winter to not go back to his old ways of driving where he’s trying to extract too much from himself and the car too quickly, but rather approach things progressively.

“We should have a car that is more suited to both drivers. I’m hoping that we’ve got rid of some of these really nasty effects last year, but they’ll also make a platform from him where he should be able to grow much quicker.”
