An incident at the start of the 2022 British GP saw Pierre Gasly trying to go past George Russell’s Mercedes, who then moved over and tagged the AlphaTauri before careering into Guanyu Zhou’s Alfa Romeo, which resulted in the Chinese driver’s car rolling over.
The Alfa Romeo then hurtled, upside down, towards the barrier and went through the gravel, before flipping over the tyre barrier and coming to a halt.
The red flag immediately came out with Russell leaping out of his Mercedes to check on his fellow F1 driver.
Thankfully, he was not seriously injured and was taken to the medical centre. Zhou was taken out of the car by the F1 extraction team and then moved into an ambulance on a stretcher. He was conscious when doing so.
Alfa Romeo confirmed Zhou’s condition and that he is being evaluated by doctors.
“Following a crash at the start of the British Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu is conscious and now at the circuit’s medical centre to undergo evaluation,” the team tweeted.
Zhou’s Alfa Romeo teammate, Valtteri Bottas, was then informed the Chinese driver’s condition.
“Zhou is conscious, he’s talking, there is no fractures and considering the circumstances, he’s pretty good,” Bottas was told over team radio.
