Ferrari warned about signing “political” Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton will replace Carlos Sainz at Ferrari for the 2025 F1 season

An ex-Formula 1 driver has slammed Ferrari‘s decision to drop Carlos Sainz for Lewis Hamilton by insisting they made have made the call too early as the Spaniard proves to be a match for Charles Leclerc in 2024.

In the early stages of the season, Sainz has finished third and won the other race, having missed one due to appendicitis back in Saudi Arabia. If he had competed in that event, it’s very probable that he would be leading the drivers’ championship thanks to Max Verstappen‘s DNF in Australia.

But even if Sainz wins every single race between now and the end of the season, it can’t save his Ferrari future as the decision has already been made to fire him to hire a seven-time world champion, something Christian Danner regards as a mistake.

“If you want Hamilton, you’ve kept the wrong one because he [Sainz] is faster,” Danner said to, before adding it wasn’t just a talent based decision. “But that’s highly political. He [Frederic Vasseur] should have waited a little longer. It wasn’t a necessity.

“I wouldn’t blame Lewis for stumbling at the moment, but one thing is clear – Sainz in this kind of form – when he has Leclerc under control like this – you can say that he [Vasseur] perhaps made his decision too early.”

Sainz’s form blows Danner away

So far, Sainz‘s points-per-race entered (PPRE) is higher than any other’s with him averaging 20 PPRE. Even Verstappen is only on 17 following his mechanical retirement at the Albert Park Circuit.

Taking this metric into account when compared to Leclerc, Sainz is out-performing his Ferrari colleague by a significant margin as the Monegasque racer averages 15.6 PPRE.

It’s a rare insight into the psychology of an F1 driver as Sainz appears to really have the bit between his teeth as he goes in pursuit of his next team, which could turn out to be Mercedes or even Red Bull if Sergio Perez fails to impress or Verstappen actually quits.

Sainz is approaching it with a commitment, a joy and an aggressiveness,” said Danner. “I really like that! It also requires a fervent attitude, ‘Now it’s me and no one else.’

“You can see it not only in his eyes, but in every corner and at the moment, Carlos Sainz is messing everything up at Ferrari. First of all, you’ve signed the wrong driver for next year. Hamilton is behind, he’s [Sainz] much better.”
