Ferrari upgrades: What upgrades have Ferrari brought to Spanish GP?

The Italian outfit are hoping to close the gap to Red Bull in Barcelona with seven upgraded parts

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will get their hands on Ferrari upgrades for the first time since Imola as their battle in the constructors’ championship moves to the Formula 1 2024 Spanish Grand Prix.

In a bid to continue challenging Red Bull and McLaren at the front and keep Mercedes behind them, the Scuderia are wasting no time in bringing their second major upgrade of the season.

Ferrari avoided introducing new parts in Miami but looked an entirely different force in Imola and Monaco, with Leclerc securing pole position and the race victory at his home race. However, a dreadful result at the Canadian GP perhaps convinced Fred Vasseur to act faster than originally planned and move their timeline forward.

They will not be the only team looking for a pace improvement in Barcelona, though, with Red Bull bringing five new updates of their own. McLaren and Mercedes have opted against doing so in Barcelona, but both teams are expected to announce upgrades before the summer break.

With Leclerc already winning his home race, will their changes prove enough for Sainz to see off Max Verstappen and clinch his second race win of the season in his native Spain?

Ferrari upgrades: What changes have been made?

Ferrari’s upgrades are comprised of seven changes to their SF-24 car, with modifications to the rear wing, engine cover, floor fences, floor body, floor edge, diffuser and the Halo.

The new rear wing has been designed to bring higher downforce, with changes to the top and lower sections of the rear wing. This includes an introduction of more loaded top and lower rear wing flap profiles, which will extend the car polar to give the team a bigger chance of finding extra speed at high-velocity circuits like Barcelona.

Their changes to the bodywork surround an increased sidepod and engine cover undercut to improve the flow quality over the floor edge and to the back of the car, giving clear aerodynamic benefits.

As a result, the floor fences at the tunnel inlet have been suitably re-aligned to fully exploit these changes.

The roof of the floor itself has been lowered at the front to enhance the effect of the Ferrari upgrades. The new floor also incorporates a new shape central ‘canoe’ section between the tunnels, revised floor edges and a new diffuser geometry. Ferrari believe that their car will benefit from tidier upstream flow structures, and the expansion of the diffuser has allowed to extract more local load gains.

Finally, the Halo – which protects the drivers head from being potentially crushed in the scenario of an incident – is being modified to offer aerodynamic advantages. The cockpit device has been further optimised and is another step at improving the management of the losses travelling downstream.
