Fernando Alonso has given his thoughts on Aston Martin’s 2023 season in Formula 1, describing it as unthinkable as he had his best campaign for a decade.

The double world champion has shown no signs of slowing down this year with a string of fine performances, including six podiums in the opening eight races.

“I see only positives here as well,” Alonso told the press. “Struggles, I think, are part of the job and part of the journey of this team. I think we started really strong with the car that was surprisingly competitive even to us [in terms of] the step from last year to this year.

“We found ourselves maybe in a position that we were not ready for; fighting with Mercedes, Ferrari – top teams that are used to fighting at that level.

“So, we maybe [took] a step back a little bit in terms of development, also with the car during the season, but we are not at the top level yet and we found ourselves a little bit less competitive.”

Alonso scored almost 75 percent of Aston Martin‘s points in the 2023 F1 season as the team improved to fifth in the constructors’ championship after finishing seventh in 2022.

The Spaniard, who has a contract with Aston Martin until the end of 2024. sees nothing but positives from the team

“All in all I think it was unthinkable 12 months ago, at this stage, to think about the campaign we did,” Alonso commented.

“I remember perfectly the test last year, after the race in Abu Dhabi with with the team. And if someone tells me that we will be in this position that we are today, I will not believe it.”
