Fernando Alonso outlines Aston Martin weak points to iron out for 2024

Fernando Alonso finished fourth in the 2023 F1 drivers' championship, his best result since 2013

Fernando Alonso has outlined some of the weak points Aston Martin face as they look to improve on their breakthrough 2023 Formula 1 campaign next year.

Aston Martin were pleased with the progress they made in 2023, with them producing the second fastest car on the grid, before slightly regressing to battling for fourth place in the standings with McLaren going into the final race weekend of the year.

They lost out to McLaren by 22 points but it’s still a major step forward from Aston Martin‘s seventh places in the constructors’ championship from 2021 and 2022.

“I think we need to find some consistency,” said Alonso to the press. “One of the weak points is that the car has to operate in a very narrow window. It is the same for everybody but it seems that we we struggle a little bit and it will be a nice if we can perform always at the stable level next year.

“Also we can improve the straight line speed. Our weak point always is a little bit too slow on the straights and if we want to be as fast as the others, we need to drop too much the rear wing and then we ended up slowing in the corners as well. So that was probably the loop that we could not get out of this season.”

Alonso on Aston Martin strengths

Alonso took six podiums in the opening eight races of 2023 and was often Red Bull‘s closest challenger in the first half of the season.

The Spaniard ranks his campaign higher than his championship-winning seasons with Renault in 2005 and 2006.

“The strength is execution of the strategy, and motivation of the team,” continued Alonso. “We are a happy team. We are a young team. We are celebrating every result as a win. And this energy, it is important to keep it for next year.”
