Fernando Alonso signs multi-year Aston Martin contract extension

Fernando Alonso will stay with Aston Martin into the new era of F1 regulations

-

Fernando Alonso announced “I am here to stay” as he extended his Aston Martin contract until at least the end of 2026, putting a definitive end to rumours that he may jump ship to Mercedes or Red Bull.

Alonso‘s first contract with Aston Martin was due to expire at the end of 2024 but the Spaniard has so far enjoyed a stellar 26 races with the team that has catapulted up the grid since his arrival.

After finishing seventh in the 2022 constructors’ championship with a best race finish of sixth and just 55 points, the team surpassed that tally just three races into 2023 and finished the season with eight podiums – all thanks to Alonso.

He had been linked with a move to Red Bull to replace Sergio Perez or to fill Lewis Hamilton‘s vacated seat at Mercedes in 2025, but will instead continue at Aston Martin into the new era of F1 regulations and their partnership with Honda.

Krack: Fernando is better than ever

Team principal Mike Krack lured Alonso to Silverstone after taking over from Otmar Szafnauer, and has always sang the praises of his star driver, even through Aston Martin‘s difficult period at the end of 2023.

While Aston Martin are yet to set foot on the rostrum in 2024, they’ve finished in the top six in three out of the four races so far, and both sides were eager to continue the partnership.

“Securing Fernando’s long-term future with Aston Martin Aramco is fantastic news,” Krack said after Alonso‘s announcement. “We have built a strong working relationship over the last 18 months and we share the same determination to see this project succeed.

“We have been in constant dialogue over the last few months and Fernando has been true to his word: when he decided he wanted to continue racing, he talked to us first. Fernando has shown he believes in us, and we believe in him.

Fernando is hungry for success, driving better than ever, is fitter than ever, and is completely dedicated to making Aston Martin Aramco a competitive force.

“This multi-year agreement with Fernando takes us into 2026 when we begin our works power unit partnership with Honda. We look forward to creating more incredible memories and achieving further success together.”
