F1 Fastest Lap: Spanish GP 2024

Find out which driver set the Spanish GP fastest lap to take claim the extra point available in Barcelona

The Spanish GP Fastest Lap award is given to the driver who posts the quickest time over one timed lap during Sunday’s race at the Formula 1 2024 Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris, who was the quickest driver in qualifying to snatch pole position from Max Verstappen, earned his first fastest lap of the season in the McLaren after showing fine pace around the Circuit de Barcelona despite losing out to Verstappen in the race.

Norris set the fastest lap of the race, a 1:17.115, on Lap 52, after fitting the soft tyres with his third pit stop of the race. The Briton was determined to catch Verstappen at the front and managed to bring the gap down from nine seconds to 2.2 seconds in the closing stages.

However, he simply ran out of time at the 66-lap race and was forced to settle for second place behind Verstappen – the fourth time the two drivers have finished P1 and P2 in that order in 2024.

Norris can at least console himself with an extra point for his efforts, which means he only loses out on six points to the championship leader in the drivers’ standings.

He also went seven tenths quicker than Verstappen when he set his best lap of a 1:17.8 after fitting the softs, which was matched by Hamilton. But the former’s ability to manage tyre degradation helped him stay at the front.

Norris not happy despite Spanish GP Fastest Lap

When he was informed by his race engineer Will Joseph that he had secured the fastest lap of the race, Norris was in no mood to celebrate.

“Yeah, it doesn’t really matter, does it? I should have won,” Norris told Joseph on the team radio. “I f***ed up the start. The car was amazing, well done. [We] deserved more.”

After the race, the 24-year-old was more reflective and even claimed they were the quickest car in Barcelona, but the Briton took the positives from his drive, which earned him his fifth podium finish this season.

“I should have won. I got a bad start. As simple as that. The car was incredible today. We were for sure the quickest. I just lost it at the beginning” Norris told F1 TV.

“Disappointed but a lot of positives. One negative and that kind of ruined everting. I know that. Apart from that, a good amount of points and thanks to the team because the car amazing.”

Norris‘ fastest lap has at least contributed to him leapfrogging Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc into second place in the drivers’ standings with 150 points, although he is now 69 points behind Verstappen with 14 races left in 2024.
