F1 Fastest Lap: Canadian GP 2024

Find out which F1 driver picked up the extra point for finishing with the fastest lap time in Canada.

Lewis Hamilton claimed the fastest lap for the second Formula 1 weekend running, claiming the extra point at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix on the final lap to pip Mercedes teammate George Russell.

It was Russell‘s slipstream in the final sector that likely proved the difference as Hamilton‘s lap was just 0.039 seconds quicker than his teammate’s best effort, but it was Mercedes‘ 2025 hope that will be happier as he took the Silver Arrows’ first podium of the season.

Hamilton produced a laptime of 1:14.856 at 3:49:04PM local time having averaged 209.730mph, just ahead of Russell‘s 209.621, as a scintillating Canadian GP served up one final twist.

Hamilton also scored the fastest lap point in Monaco but his final circumnavigation around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was almost 50mph faster than a fortnight ago, when he averaged a pedestrian 161.979 mph.

His Montreal extra means Mercedes don’t cede any constructors’ championship ground to McLaren who finished second and fifth with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri respectively.

However, both teams have made up ground on Ferrari who had a nightmare weekend to forget – missing Q3 with both cars and recording a double-retirement in the race to dash hopes they could seriously reopen their own championship battle with Red Bull.

“One of my worst races” nets Hamilton season-best result

It’s the first time Hamilton has finished in the top five of a grand prix in 2024, yet he branded the afternoon a ‘”really poor performance” and added it was “one of the worst races I’ve ever driven” after climbing out of his W15.

He showed race pace on par with victor Max Verstappen for spells in Canada but made too many mistakes to make that count, and saw a third-place finish snatched away from him in the final laps by Russell.

It means Hamilton‘s podium drought will have extended past eight months by the time he next hits the track in Spain, as he’s only beaten Russell twice on Sundays in 2024 having announced his bombshell departure for Ferrari before the start of the season.
