Max Verstappen topped off victory at the Miami GP with an extra point for fastest lap as the Red Bull driver extended his lead at the top of the F1 Drivers’ Championship.
Verstappen recovered from a mistake in qualifying which put him ninth on the grid for the race in Florida to beat teammate Sergio Perez to the win, taking his third victory of the 2023 season so far.
Verstappen was able to go long on his hard tyres early in the race and keep touch with Perez before passing him on fresher medium rubber in the latter stages, with no other team once again able to keep pace with the Red Bull pair.
Fernando Alonso was once again best of the rest for Aston Martin in third, while George Russell secured fourth for Mercedes after a tricky weekend for the team.
Driver of the Day
Verstappen’s performance was also rewarded by the fans’ vote for Driver of the Day, despite the Dutchman’s teammate Perez receiving most of the adulation within the stadium in Miami.
“It was a good race, I stayed out of trouble and was able to stay out long on the first stint,” Verstappen said.
“Yesterday was a bit of a setback, but today we kept it clean and it feels so good to win from ninth.”
