Alpine confirm Esteban Ocon is to leave the F1 team

The French driver will be searching for a new team as he prepares to part ways with Alpine at the end of the 2024 season.

Alpine have announced that driver Esteban Ocon will leave the team at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season.

In a team statement released on Monday afternoon, it was confirmed by the French team that Ocon would be leaving upon the expiry of his contract, despite holding talks with the team earlier this season. He has already publicly addressed speculation linking him with Mercedes and a short-term deal hasn’t been ruled out.

The 27-year-old has been with the Enstone team since the start of the 2020 campaign and memorably secured his maiden F1 win at the Hungarian Grand Prix during the 2021 season – their first since rebranding from Renault.

In addition to his victory in Budapest, Ocon recorded two podium finishes during his five years, achieving second place at the 2020 Sakhir GP and the 2023 Monaco GP, where he finished in third. He also finished eighth in the 2022 drivers’ championship, contributing to the team’s fourth place finish in the constructors’ the same year.

However, the Frenchman’s future was thrown into serious doubt following his latest tussle with team-mate Pierre Gasly at the Monaco GP, with team principal Bruno Famin warning there would be “consequences” for Ocon as a result of their collision.

And now Ocon will be looking to find another drive for the 2025 season after it was decided that he would part ways with Alpine, bringing an end to their five-year association.

“It’s been a significant period of my life to be racing at this team in Formula 1. While I’ve been here for five years as a full-time racing driver, my professional career started at Enstone back when I was a teenager, so it will always be a special place for me,” Ocon said in a team statement.

“We have had some great moments together, some tough moments as well, and I am certainly grateful to everyone at the team for these memorable times.

Alpine searching for Ocon replacement

Famin appeared to withdraw his threat to remove Ocon from his seat for the next race in Canada after reacting furiously to his crash in Monaco, which saw him retire from the race, after confirming they would finish the final 16 races together in 2024.

“We would like to firstly thank Esteban for his commitment to the team for the past five years. During his time, we have celebrated some fantastic moments together, the best of which coming at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix with a memorable race win,” Famin said.

“We still have 16 races to complete in 2024 together with a clear objective: to continue to work tirelessly as a team to push for the best on-track results. We wish Esteban the very best for the next chapter of his driving career when that moment comes.”

It means that Alpine boss Famin will be looking for a replacement for 2025, with Carlos Sainz one of the high-profile names still available in the driver market. Mick Schumacher and Jack Doohan are also potential contenders to replace Ocon.

Ocon, who has been loosely linked with the vacant seat at Mercedes, in addition to Haas and Williams, also said he will make an announcement on his plans “very soon”.
