Dutch motorsport legend shocked by Andretti’s snub from F1

Andretti‘s bid to enter Formula 1 has been denied by the sport’s stakeholders, meaning no new teams will join the championship before 2028

Former Le Mans 24 Hours winner Jan Lammers has expressed disappointment at Andretti‘s bid to join Formula 1 being rejected by the sport’s stakeholders.

Andretti, who first tried to enter F1 in 2021 through a failed takeover bid of the Sauber team, expressed their desire to enter the sport as an 11th team for 2026. Andretti then received the backing of General Motors through the Cadillac brand and had recruited former Renault technical director Nick Chester to the team.

Despite securing the support of Cadillac, Andretti‘s entry for 2026 was rejected by F1 on the grounds of not adding value to the championship and being a potential burden on race promoters.

“I can understand that the other teams are concerned because you have to split the income when you split that over 11 teams or 10 teams, of course, that’s the thing,” Lammers exclusively told Total-Motorsport.com.

“At the same time, I just thought like, my god, this is what we’ve come to, that a beautiful name, like Andretti, is refused entry into Formula 1.

“So, that gives you an idea about the market value and the demand for Formula 1 entries. On one hand, I’m a little disappointed, I would have loved more cars to compete for those 20 places.

“So yeah, you have to trust the judgement, that they have good reasons not to do it. So, yeah, I’ll pass judgment on to FOM and trust that they had good reasons to do it. But personally, of course, I was disappointed to see that a name like Andretti is not going to be part of Formula 1.”

Lammers a fan of outspoken Verstappen

Since 2021, F1‘s popularity has exploded with several Grand Prix selling out and increased competition to secure one of the 24 spots on the calendar.

F1‘s owners, Liberty Media, have also changed the fan experience, encouraging fans to use more sustainable transport methods, such as public transport or cycling rather than cars.

On track, Liberty media continues to persist with Sprint races, with six mini-races taking place throughout the 2024 season, which begins this week in Bahrain.

However, not everyone is a fan of the changes to the format, with Max Verstappen publicly calling for a return to a traditional race weekend rather than persisting Sprint weekends.

“I think it’s good to keep people on their toes. I don’t think he’s, he’s more critical than others,” said Lammers when asked about Verstappen‘s comments. “But he’s more outspoken. If he gives you just his honest answer, and then not many people like that, of course, but still, it’s what he thinks.

“And I think that Formula 1 has done a lot to market the sport, and they’ve done a phenomenal job. But of course, it is important that they find a good balance, where the entertainment value of Formula 1 has gone up enormously, and the market value is phenomenal.

“So they’ve done a fantastic job. And now it’s time, of course, to make sure that it doesn’t go away at the expense of the sport value of it. So we keep it a fair competition.”
