Biography and Early Career

Valtteri Bottas was born on 28 August 1989 in Nastola, Finland. Growing up in a country with a rich motorsport heritage, Bottas developed a passion for racing at a young age and began karting in his early childhood. His natural speed and calm, methodical approach quickly set him apart, leading to success in national and international karting competitions.

Bottas transitioned to single seaters in the late 2000s, winning the Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula Renault Northern European Cup titles in 2008. He continued to impress in the junior ranks, notably securing back to back Masters of Formula 3 victories in 2009 and 2010. These achievements established him as one of the most promising drivers of his generation and earned him a place in the Williams driver development programme, paving the way to Formula 1.

Formula 1 Career

Williams Breakthrough (2013–2016)

Bottas made his Formula 1 debut with Williams in 2013, partnering Pastor Maldonado. After a learning year with a struggling car, he emerged as one of the standout performers of the 2014 season as Williams returned to competitiveness under the new hybrid regulations. Bottas scored six podium finishes that year and ended the championship fourth, confirming his status as a future race winner.

He remained with Williams through 2016, consistently delivering strong results and establishing a reputation for smooth driving, tyre management, and exceptional qualifying pace.

Mercedes Years (2017–2021)

In 2017, Bottas joined Mercedes to replace the retiring Nico Rosberg, partnering Lewis Hamilton. He secured his first Grand Prix victory at the Russian Grand Prix that season and went on to win multiple races during his time with the team. Bottas played a crucial role in helping Mercedes secure five consecutive Constructors’ Championships between 2017 and 2021.

Although he often operated in support of Hamilton’s title campaigns, Bottas remained a consistent front runner and finished runner up in the Drivers’ Championship in 2019 and 2020. His time at Mercedes cemented his reputation as one of Formula 1’s most reliable and technically astute drivers.
