Biography and Early Career
Max Verstappen was born on 30 September 1997 in Hasselt, Belgium. He grew up in a racing family as the son of former Formula 1 driver Jos Verstappen and former karting star Sophie Kumpen. With racing in his blood, Max began karting at a young age and quickly made a name for himself on the junior circuit. In 2013, at just 15 years old, he delivered a record-breaking karting season by winning multiple major titles, including two European championships and a world championship in the high-powered KZ class. This unprecedented feat – which included defeating future F1 rival Charles Leclerc in a title showdown – solidified his status as one of karting’s brightest talents.
Following his karting dominance, Verstappen moved to single-seater racing in 2014. He debuted in the Florida Winter Series early that year before joining the FIA European Formula 3 Championship with Van Amersfoort Racing. Despite being only 16, Verstappen won 10 races in the ultra-competitive F3 series – including six consecutive victories – and finished third in the championship. His raw speed and fearless racecraft impressed across the paddock. Midway through 2014, Verstappen signed with the Red Bull Junior Team, and in October 2014, just days after his 17th birthday, he became the youngest driver to take part in a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend when he drove in Friday practice for Toro Rosso at the Japanese Grand Prix.
By the end of 2014, it was confirmed that Verstappen would race for Toro Rosso in the 2015 F1 season. At 17 years and 166 days, he became the youngest driver in F1 history to start a Grand Prix at the Australian Grand Prix, and just two weeks later in Malaysia, he became the youngest points scorer in F1 history.
Formula 1 Career
Toro Rosso (2015–2016)
Verstappen made an immediate impact in his rookie season, scoring points regularly and securing two fourth-place finishes in Hungary and the United States. His aggressive overtaking and confident racecraft earned him the FIA Rookie of the Year award.
In early 2016, after just four races, Red Bull Racing promoted Verstappen to replace Daniil Kvyat. In his first race for the team, the Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen made history as the youngest race winner in F1 at 18 years and 228 days old. That year he scored seven podiums and finished fifth in the championship.
Red Bull Rise (2017–2020)
In 2017, Verstappen won in Malaysia and Mexico despite a season disrupted by reliability issues. He refined his approach in 2018, securing wins in Austria and Mexico, finishing ahead of teammate Daniel Ricciardo and cementing his position as the team’s lead driver.
In 2019, Red Bull’s new partnership with Honda coincided with Verstappen’s strongest season to date – three wins, two poles, and third place in the championship. In 2020’s shortened season, he added two more wins and eleven podiums, again finishing third overall.
World Championships and Dominance (2021–2023)
The 2021 season delivered an epic title battle with Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen won ten races and, in a dramatic final-lap pass in Abu Dhabi, claimed his first World Championship.
In 2022, Verstappen dominated, winning 15 races and securing the title with races to spare. Red Bull also won the Constructors’ Championship.
The 2023 season was even more dominant, with Verstappen winning 19 of 22 races, breaking multiple records, and securing his third consecutive championship.
Continued Success (2024–2025)
In 2024, Verstappen won nine races and clinched his fourth straight title despite stronger competition from McLaren and Ferrari. In 2025, he remains at the forefront of the championship fight, continuing to deliver victories and poles as Red Bull remains the benchmark.
Driving Style and Strengths
Verstappen is known for his aggressive yet calculated racecraft, excelling in wheel-to-wheel battles and executing bold overtakes. He is adaptable to varying conditions and particularly skilled in wet weather, with a reputation as one of the best rain drivers of his generation. Over time, he has developed strong tire management and strategic awareness, balancing raw pace with race-long consistency. His technical feedback and leadership within Red Bull Racing have helped shape the team’s cars into championship winners.
