Biography and Early Career
Charles Leclerc was born on 16 October 1997 in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Growing up in the close-knit motorsport community of the principality, Leclerc was immersed in racing from an early age. His father Herve was a Formula 3 driver, and family friend Jules Bianchi – who became Leclerc’s godfather – was a major influence.
Leclerc began karting at the age of five and quickly established himself as a prodigious talent. He won multiple regional and national titles, claiming the junior karting world cup crown in 2011. Two years later, he battled future F1 rival Max Verstappen for the KZ karting world championship, narrowly missing out on the title.
In 2014, Leclerc moved into single-seaters, finishing runner-up in Formula Renault 2.0 Alps with two victories. He progressed to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2015, securing four wins and a podium at the Macau Grand Prix. In 2016, Leclerc joined the Ferrari Driver Academy and won the GP3 Series title in his rookie year. The following season, he dominated FIA Formula 2, taking seven feature race wins and eight pole positions, becoming the first driver to win GP3 and F2 in consecutive rookie campaigns.
Formula 1 Career (2018–2025)
Rookie Season – Alfa Romeo Sauber (2018): Leclerc made his F1 debut with Alfa Romeo Sauber in 2018. In a modest car, the 20-year-old impressed immediately, notably finishing sixth in Azerbaijan and scoring 39 points across the year. He consistently outperformed teammate Marcus Ericsson, establishing himself as the standout rookie and earning a promotion to Ferrari.
Scuderia Ferrari Rise (2019–2020): In 2019, Leclerc joined Scuderia Ferrari as their youngest driver in decades. He claimed his first F1 win at Spa-Francorchamps, dedicating it to Bianchi, and followed up with a historic victory at Monza. That season he achieved 10 podiums and 7 pole positions – the most of any driver – and outscored teammate Sebastian Vettel. The 2020 campaign proved tougher, as Ferrari’s pace dropped. Despite this, Leclerc delivered two podiums and far outscored Vettel before the German’s departure.

Battling with Sainz and Title Fight (2021–2022): In 2021, Carlos Sainz joined Ferrari. The pair enjoyed a competitive but respectful partnership, with Sainz narrowly outscoring Leclerc that year. Leclerc took poles in Monaco and Baku and came close to victory at Silverstone. In 2022, Ferrari returned to front-running form and Leclerc seized early wins in Bahrain and Australia. He fought Max Verstappen for the title, securing three victories and nine pole positions, but reliability issues and strategy errors cost him the championship. He finished runner-up, confirming his place among F1’s elite.
Recent Seasons and Hamilton Partnership (2023–2025): The 2023 season saw Ferrari struggle again, with Leclerc securing six podiums but no wins. In 2024, Ferrari rebounded and Leclerc triumphed in Monaco, Monza, and Austin, achieving 13 podiums and finishing third in the standings with his highest points total to date. For 2025, Ferrari signed Lewis Hamilton, creating a high-profile partnership. Midway through the season, Leclerc remains a consistent podium contender, determined to deliver Ferrari’s first drivers’ title since 2007.
