Biography and Early Career
Carlos Sainz was born on September 1, 1994, in Madrid, Spain. He is the son of rally legend Carlos Sainz Sr., a two-time World Rally Champion, giving him a rich motorsport heritage. Under his father’s guidance, Sainz Jr. began karting in 2006 and quickly found success on the junior circuit. He claimed major karting titles such as the Asia-Pacific KF3 championship in 2008 and the Junior Monaco Kart Cup in 2009, marking him as a rising talent from an early age.
Transitioning to single-seater racing in 2010, Sainz joined the Red Bull Junior Team program – an affiliation that would shape his early career. He competed in Formula BMW Europe in 2010 and by 2011 had won the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup, while also finishing as runner-up in the Formula Renault Eurocup that year. Further honing his skills, Sainz raced in British and European Formula 3 in 2012 and in the GP3 Series in 2013. His breakthrough came in 2014 when he clinched the Formula Renault 3.5 Series championship with DAMS. These junior formula successes – combined with his Red Bull backing – paved the way for his promotion to Formula 1.
Formula 1 Career
Toro Rosso, Renault and McLaren (2015–2020)
Sainz debuted in Formula 1 with Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2015, joining as part of a famed rookie lineup alongside Max Verstappen. In his maiden season he showed promise, scoring points on debut and achieving a best finish of 7th place. He continued with Toro Rosso through 2016 and into 2017, developing a reputation for consistency and solid racecraft.
Mid-way through 2017, Sainz switched to Renault, taking over Jolyon Palmer’s seat. He made an immediate impact, finishing 7th on his debut for the team and helping Renault secure valuable points in the Constructors’ Championship. In 2018, Sainz scored 53 points and a best race finish of 5th, proving himself as a dependable points scorer.
In 2019, Sainz moved to McLaren, replacing Fernando Alonso. This proved to be a turning point in his career, as he established himself as a team leader alongside Lando Norris. Sainz secured his first Formula 1 podium at the Brazilian Grand Prix and finished 6th in the championship. In 2020, he added another podium with a second place at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, again finishing 6th overall and playing a key role in McLaren’s third place in the Constructors’ standings.

Ferrari Years and Williams Move (2021–2025)
Sainz joined Scuderia Ferrari in 2021, replacing Sebastian Vettel. In his first year he scored four podium finishes and outscored teammate Charles Leclerc, finishing 5th in the championship. In 2022, Sainz claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory at the British Grand Prix and added eight more podiums to his tally, again finishing 5th overall.
In 2023, he secured Ferrari’s only win of the season at the Singapore Grand Prix with a brilliantly controlled drive, while in 2024 he won the Australian and Mexico City Grands Prix. By the end of his Ferrari spell, Sainz had taken four wins and 15 podiums for the team.
In 2025, Sainz moved to Williams Racing to partner Alex Albon. While results were more modest compared to his Ferrari years, Sainz’s experience and technical feedback became vital to Williams’ development program. He scored points finishes in several races, with a best result of 8th place in Saudi Arabia, and played a mentoring role within the team.
Driving Style and Strengths
Sainz is known for his consistency, technical intelligence, and strategic racecraft. He delivers highly consistent lap times, which aids tyre preservation and gives engineers reliable data for strategy. His detailed feedback has been invaluable in car development at every team he has driven for.
Tyre management is one of Sainz’s greatest strengths. He is able to extend stints without significant performance drop-off, allowing for flexible strategy calls. His overtaking is calculated and low-risk, while his defensive driving has frustrated many faster rivals. Sainz is adaptable to changing race conditions, quick to adjust strategy mid-race, and maintains composure under pressure, all of which make him a dependable asset for any team.
