Biography and Early Career
Alex Albon (born 23 March 1996) is a Thai-British racing driver raised in Suffolk, England. The son of former British racer Nigel Albon and a Thai mother, Albon holds dual nationality but competes under the Thai flag in Formula 1. He developed an early passion for motorsport, reportedly saying “Ferrari” as his first word, inspired by Michael Schumacher. Albon began karting competitively at the age of eight, winning local championships and rising quickly through Britain’s cadet karting ranks.
By his teenage years, Albon had established himself as one of the most talented young karters in the world, winning both the CIK-FIA World Cup and European Championship titles in 2010. His move into cars came in 2012 with Formula Renault 2.0, where he spent three seasons, finishing third overall in the 2014 Eurocup. He went on to compete in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2015, securing multiple podiums, and finished runner-up to Charles Leclerc in the 2016 GP3 Series. Two strong seasons in Formula 2 followed, culminating in a third-place finish in the 2018 championship behind George Russell and Lando Norris.
Formula 1 Career
Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing (2019–2020)
Albon’s Formula 1 debut came with Scuderia Toro Rosso at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix. After impressing with consistent points finishes, he was promoted mid-season to Red Bull Racing to replace Pierre Gasly. Albon adapted quickly, finishing in the top six in eight of his nine races with the senior team that year, scoring 92 points.
In 2020, Albon remained at Red Bull and achieved his first two F1 podiums at the Tuscan and Bahrain Grands Prix, becoming the first Thai driver to stand on the podium. Despite these successes and 105 points in the standings, Red Bull replaced him for 2021, moving him into a reserve and test role.

Reserve Role and Williams Comeback (2021–2025)
Albon spent 2021 as Red Bull’s reserve driver while competing in the DTM, finishing sixth overall. In 2022, he returned to a full-time F1 seat with Williams Racing, replacing George Russell. Despite the car’s limitations, Albon scored points in Australia, Miami and Belgium, ending the season with four points.
The 2023 season saw significant improvement, with Albon scoring 27 points and delivering standout drives in Canada and Italy, helping Williams finish seventh in the Constructors’ Championship. In 2024, he added another 12 points, with a best result of seventh in Azerbaijan, and signed a multi-year contract extension.
For 2025, Albon was joined by Carlos Sainz at Williams. In the first half of the season, he delivered multiple top-five finishes and by mid-year had already scored 54 points, firmly establishing himself as a key figure in the team’s resurgence.
Driving Style and Strengths
Albon is known for his adaptable and intelligent approach to racing. He combines clean overtaking skills with resolute defensive driving, often holding off faster cars through strategic positioning and precise car placement. His ability to manage tyres is among the best in Formula 1, as shown in his remarkable 57-lap stint on hard tyres at the 2022 Australian Grand Prix to secure points from the back of the grid.
Albon’s qualifying pace has steadily improved, allowing him to reach Q3 in machinery not always capable of it. His consistency, low error rate and clear communication make him an invaluable asset for car development. These qualities, coupled with his composure under pressure, have helped Williams maximise opportunities in both strategy and results.
