-

Lewis Hamilton finally ended his long wait for a race victory at the Formula 1 2024 British GP as he celebrated on the podium with thousands of fans at his home race with a perfect F1 driver rating.

The Mercedes star drove a sublime race at the front and got ahead of Lando Norris in the pits, as well as seeing off the threat from Max Verstappen late in the race, to claim his first victory since Saudi Arabia 2021.

The 39-year-old also became the first driver to win nine races at Silverstone and enjoyed his 150th podium finish in Mercedes colours to cap an unforgettable weekend for the Silver Arrows. But how did the seven-time world champion compare with the rest in our British GP driver ratings?

Total-Motorsport.com’s British GP Driver Ratings assesses all 20 drivers based on their Qualifying and Grand Prix performances.

George Russell 7/10

Qualifying: 1st – Race: DNF

Got off the line perfectly from pole position to stay in front of Hamilton and etched out a one-second gap to deny his team-mate DRS. But he found it tough going due to the slippery conditions and soon fell down the order to fourth, before a water cooling failure forced him to retire from the race. An agonising end to a fine weekend.

Lewis Hamilton 10/10

Qualifying: 2nd – Race: 1st

Hunted down Russell with a menacing presence and got the move done under DRS on the slippery surface on Lap 18. From there, Hamilton was sensational in every sense of the word. He managed his tyres superbly, put the hammer down on his in-laps when it was crucial to do so and found the grip on the damp track. He led the last 17 laps on soft tyres and kept Verstappen at bay. This was the champion’s drive everyone knows he has in his locker, and now he has the car to do it.

Lando Norris 8.5/10

Qualifying: 3rd – Race: 3rd

Didn’t have any grip at the start and lost out to Verstappen. But the McLaren had incredible grip on the medium tyre and his confidence on the greasy track surface was something to admire as he passed both Mercedes. However, he committed a crucial error when choosing his dry tyres that undoubtedly cost him victory at his home race.

Max Verstappen 9/10

Qualifying: 4th – Race: 2nd

Passed Norris at Turn 3 on the first lap but couldn’t find pace to keep up with Mercedes duo. Struggled for pace towards the end of the first stint and was easily overtaken by both McLarens, but fought back thanks to some clever pit strategy from his team. Somehow dragged his bafflingly slow car to second, which only exemplifies the Dutchman’s skill in wet weather.

Oscar Piastri 8/10

Qualifying: 5th – Race: 4th

Made a brave move on Verstappen when the rain started to arrive, then got past Russell in the same area to climb up to P2. McLaren left him out for one lap too long and he lost a huge amount of time to those who pitted for intermediates. He fought back to overtake Sainz but the damage was done to his race – and not by him either.

Nico Hulkenberg 9/10

Qualifying: 6th – Race: 6th

Lost three places on the first lap after outbreaking himself and that looked to have ruined his chances of scoring significant points. But the 2024 version of Hulkenberg, in a surprisingly quick Haas, doesn’t give up. He found his way back past both Aston Martins and benefited from George Russell and Charles Leclerc’s misfortune to clinch a massive result for his team.

Carlos Sainz 8/10

Qualifying: 7th – Race: 5th

Showed how quick he is in the wet behind Verstappen as he was all over the back of the Red Bull and if Ferrari’s strategy was more aggressive, he might have finished on the podium. Earned the fastest lap of the race after putting on brand new tyres at the end of the race, which was a small consolation for his efforts.

Lance Stroll 8/10

Qualifying: 8th – Race: 7th

His best-ever result at Silverstone and finishing ahead of Alonso gives Stroll something to celebrate. The Canadian looked quick, having kept Leclerc behind him for longer than many would have expected, and he was only seven tenths behind Hulkenberg as they crossed the line. As we saw in Canada – where he also finished P7 – he relishes damp conditions.

Alex Albon 8/10

Qualifying: 9th – Race: 9th

This is only the second time this season Albon and Williams have scored points in 2024, and how crucial it could be come the end of the season. Clearly their car enjoys the high-speed corners at Silverstone and Albon put in a professional display at his half-home race, passing Tsunoda to double his tally for the season.

Fernando Alonso 7.5/10

Qualifying: 10th – Race: 8th

Aston Martin’s recent troubles would have had Alonso questioning his decision to renew with the team, but this was more a reflection of what we’ve seen from the Spaniard. He played the role of the perfect team-mate to keep his rivals behind him while Stroll chased down Hulkenberg.

Charles Leclerc 5/10

Qualifying: 11th – Race: 14th

The Monegasque made up for a shoddy qualifying by rising three places on the first lap and then a crucial move on Stroll to chase after Sainz. But Ferrari chose to put him on the green-marked intermediate tyre too early and it wrecked his race, as he was P7 at the time.

Logan Sargeant 7/10

Qualifying: 12th – Race: 11th

It’s easy to be critical about Sargeant’s season, but let’s give praise where it’s due. Having qualified 12th, he wasn’t miles behind Albon this weekend and was only a matter of eight seconds off scoring his first point of the season. A season-best P11 will have to make do for now, but he’s finally responded to James Vowles’ pleas for an improvement.

Yuki Tsunoda 7/10

Qualifying: 13th – Race: 10th

Another weekend where Perez has a nightmare and Tsunoda adds more points to his tally. It’s time to give him a chance, Red Bull. This is no longer about Tsunoda’s misgivings – he’s beaten Ricciardo 6-4 in races where they have both finished – and the Japanese will be difficult to ignore if he continues scoring.

Zhou Guanyu 4/10

Qualifying: 14th – Race: 18th`

Sauber’s strategy was, simply put, an unmitigated disaster and Zhou paid the price. The Swiss team pitted him for slick tyres despite the fact the rain was on the way, and their choice for intermediate tyres was misguided too. The result left Zhou humiliated in finishing two laps down.

Daniel Ricciardo 6/10

Qualifying: 15th – Race: 13th

The fourth time in his career Ricciardo has finished 13th at Silverstone and it’s clearly not one his best tracks. He was far off the pace in qualifying and couldn’t make much progress in the race either. The 35-year-old is running out of time to prove himself to Red Bull.

Valtteri Bottas 5/10

Qualifying: 16th – Race: 15th

He only had two stops, yet still finished behind Leclerc, who had spent 20 or so laps on worn-out intermediates. Still without a point in 2024, and he’s done little to convince teams he would be worth gambling on for next year.

Kevin Magnussen 6/10

Qualifying: 17th – Race: 12th

Another weekend where his team-mate has caught the rays of spotlight and Magnussen paid the price for a poor qualifying. The pace in the Haas is there to see, but the Dane is unable to find consistency in his performances.

Esteban Ocon 4/10

Qualifying: 18th – Race: 16th

“A weekend to forget” was how Ocon described it. No arguments here. Reports suggest he is the frontrunner for the Haas seat alongside Ollie Bearman next year, but this was a nightmare after finishing two laps down.

Pierre Gasly N/A

Qualifying: 19th – Race: DNF

Spun out in qualifying in the wet and then was informed of a gearbox issue with his car on his way to the grid. A wretched time for the Alpine star.

Sergio Perez 2/10

Qualifying: 20th (pit lane start) – Race: 17th

An embarrassing qualifying performance was compounded by his trip to the gravel pit. Took a host of penalties for changing his car, but every gamble Perez’s team took went against them as he went far too early for inters and lost 25 seconds in four laps. Lapped twice by the frontrunners to sum up a .”horrible” race, as Christian Horner put it.
