F1 Driver of the Day – Spanish GP 2023

Hamilton came over the line in second after qualifying fifth on the grid.

    -

Lewis Hamilton won the fan vote for Driver of the Day at the 2023 Spanish GP as the Mercedes driver secured second.

Mercedes showed significantly improved pace at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Hamilton’s teammate George Russell coming over the line in third for the team’s first double podium of 2023.

However, the improvement was not enough to challenge the dominance of Red Bull and Max Verstappen, with the Dutchman comfortably controlling the race from start to finish 24 seconds in front of Hamilton.

The result marked a step forward for Mercedes with their new car design direction and upgrades introduced over the last two races, with Hamilton moving up from fifth on the grid at the start and Russell surging from 14th.

    Verstappen dominance

Verstappen once again demonstrated why he is set to take his third consecutive world championship, with the Dutchman never looking ruffled after fending off the challenge of Carlos Sainz off the line.

With the Ferrari’s attempted overtake into Turn 1 thwarted, no driver at any point managed to look like threatening the leader, and Verstappen was able to take the extra point for fastest lap after a late pitstop for fresh soft tyres.

Where is the next F1 2023 race?

With the F1 circus finished in Spain, the next race is the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix which will be held at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal over the weekend of June 16-18.
