Esteban Ocon won the fan vote for Driver of the Day at the 2023 Monaco GP after the Alpine driver secured the team’s first podium finish of the year.
Ocon pulled out a stellar final lap during qualifying to put his car in third for the race, and in a tricky afternoon when the weather challenged the drivers around the twisting street circuit, the Frenchman managed to hold on for third at the line.
However, he had no answer to the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, as the Dutchman led the race from start to finish from pole to secure victory and extend his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.
Aston Martin had hoped that Fernando Alonso could mount a challenge for victory after just missing out to Verstappen for pole position, but the team were unable to keep pace with the champion and Alonso had to settle for second.
Late Drama
Despite Verstappen’s dominance in Monte Carlo, there was some jeopardy to the race late on after forecast rain finally materialised.
A number of drivers struggled in the conditions, with the Red Bull driver tapping the barriers in the lead, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide of the race against the Dutchman.
While several incidents saw drivers head to the run-off area, there were no major crashes and the safety car remained unused.
