F1 Driver of the Day – Mexico City GP 2023

Lando Norris came from 17th on the grid to eventually finish in fifth place to take Driver of the Day award at 2023 Mexico City GP

Max Verstappen equalled Alain Prost’s Formula 1 win record with a dominant victory in Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix, but it was Lando Norris who won Driver of the Day after a stellar comeback drive.

Norris, who started 17th after a scruffy Qualifying session, charged through the pack to finish fifth, gaining 12 positions with several superb overtakes, to finish in fifth position.

Lewis Hamilton finished a fine second place and cut the gap between him and Sergio Perez, who failed to finish his race in their fight for the runner-up spot in the drivers’ standings.

Charles Leclerc came home third despite suffering from front wing damage following his collision with Perez, whilst Carlos Sainz held Norris back for fourth.

A fiesta in Mexico City

A carnival atmosphere greeted the Formula 1 circus for a highly anticipated Mexico City GP, which saw the Ferraris lock out the front row from Verstappen and the surprise of the weekend, Daniel Ricciardo.

Home hero Sergio Perez started fifth, but to the crowd’s dismay, the Mexican’s race ended after one lap following contact with Charles Leclerc into Turn 1, damaging the Monegasque’s front wing.

Verstappen stretched out a lead of over three seconds on the Monegasque during the race’s first stint before his first pitstop on Lap 20 before retaking the lead on Lap 31 after Leclerc’s stopped.

But the Dutchman’s lead was nullified after Kevin Magnussen suffered a rear suspension failure at Turn 8 on Lap 33, slamming into the wall and causing damage to the barrier, bringing the red flag out.

At the restart, Verstappen made a cracker of a start and held his lead through Turn 1 as the field navigated the first section of corners cleanly.

Verstappen never relinquished his lead and secured his 16th victory of 2023 from Hamilton, Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, Norris and George Russell, who rounded off the top six.
