F1 Driver of the Day – British GP 2022

Red Bull's Sergio Perez was voted F1's Driver of the Day after surging through the field to claim second at the 2022 British Grand Prix

    -

Carlos Sainz might have won an enthralling race at Silverstone, but Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was voted 2022 British GP Driver of the Day.

The British Grand Prix was arguably the best race of the 2022 Formula 1 season with the Grand Prix witnessing a bit of everything.

The first lap of the race saw Alfa Romeo‘s Zhou Guanyu crash heavily into the barrier after making contact with Mercedes’ George Russell and AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly, leading the race to be red-flagged.

The restart saw Max Verstappen and Sainz battle for the lead with the Spaniard prevailing after a scrappy duel. Perez would make contact with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc resulting in the Red Bull driver being forced to pit for a new front wing.

Verstappen would eventually pass Sainz before suffering from damage after running into a piece of debris on the race track. The Dutchman would damage his floor with the resulting pace loss to his Red Bull dropping him back down the order.

The battle at the front would see a threeway duel emerge between Lewis Hamilton, Leclerc and Sainz. Leclerc would lead the middle part of the race before a Safety Car was deployed to recover the stricken Alpine of Esteban Ocon who suffered a mechanical issue.

    Perez seizes his opportunity

The Safety Car would lead a barrage of pit stops with Perez the big winner after the Mexican had slowly crept up the order after his early pit stop.

At the restart, Sainz would get the jump on Leclerc, who did not pit for new tyres, but a phenomenal battle emerged between Perez, Leclerc and Hamilton with the trio battling each other and exchanging positions for several laps.

Perez would eventually prevail with the Mexican driver securing a well-earned second place and the fan votes needed to secure Formula 1’s Driver of Day accolade.
