Daniel Ricciardo ‘not that much of an a***hole’ as Lance Stroll feud rumbles on in Miami GP

The pair have yet to resolve their spat which began following Stroll's shunt on Ricciardo in China

Daniel Ricciardo has opened the door to making amends with Lance Stroll, but insists he is yet to receive an apology after the Aston Martin driver wrecked his race during the Formula 1 2024 Chinese Grand Prix.

Stroll was deemed to be at fault by the stewards for crashing into the back of the RB driver under safety car conditions and was handed a 10-second time penalty by the stewards. Ricciardo reacted angrily to a second consecutive retirement, saying “F**k that guy” after the race, while Stroll called his fellow driver an “idiot”, leaving the 34-year-old seething.

Ahead of the Miami GP, Ricciardo was asked if he and Stroll have spoken to each other since their clash in Shanghai under the Safety Car, to which the Visa Cash App RB driver smiled and simply replied: “No.”

In the scenario where Stroll would be willing to apologise, Ricciardo has made it clear he would be willing to call it water under the bridge, but he admits he is not expecting such a gesture from the 25-year-old.

“I would say no [to meeting to apologise], because I feel it’s not going to go anywhere,” Ricciardo said. “If he texted just saying, ‘Yeah, you know, my bad’, whatever. OK, I can accept an apology. I’m not that much of an a***hole.

“But the fact that there’s not even that, he clearly doesn’t think he did anything wrong. So I guess there’s not much to say.”

Stroll coy on Ricciardo talks

Stroll was quizzed on whether he had reached out to the Australian during the 10-day break between Shanghai and Miami, but the Canadian refused to discuss the details after declaring: “It’s not for this room, those things are done behind closed doors.”

The Aston Martin driver added that the incident was “unfortunate”, but seemingly ducked any follow-up questions he was focusing on the race in Florida. At least that is one thing he can agree on with Ricciardo, who is excited to return racing in the Sunshine State as he looks to score his first points of the season.

“I’m in a better mood because we’re back at a racetrack again,” Ricciardo said. “Obviously, I was super frustrated – any DNF is frustrating – but that one, of course, was even more frustrating.

“When you don’t see a chequered flag, you just want to race again, like you just want to get back in the car. For that, I’m actually really happy it’s a sprint weekend because it’s two races. I’m excited to be here.”
