Daniel Ricciardo explains decade-long quest to right wrongs at Australian GP

Daniel Ricciardo has never finished higher than fourth at the Australian GP - officially

Daniel Ricciardo revealed he still remembers his second-place at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix as if it stood and he wasn’t subsequently disqualified, but added he’s still aiming for an official home podium a decade later.

Despite Albert Park joining the F1 calendar in 1996, the wait for an Australian to take a home podium – and keep it – continues but hopes are high after Oscar Piastri‘s impressive fourth-place at the 2024 Saudi Arabian GP where he comfortably outperformed teammate Lando Norris.

Meanwhile, Ricciardo arrives for just his second Melbourne race of the 2020s thanks to coronavirus and the scars of his own battle with Norris at McLaren, but is yet to score his first points of 2024.

“At the time of standing on the podium and all that, I thought I had it,” Ricciardo told the media. “So I think that’s what I still hold on to in terms of, in that moment in time I stood on a home podium and the crowd all thought I had the podium.

“In my head the anthem was playing – the German one would have been playing for Rosberg but it was playing for me – yeah so I felt it and that was all real. Obviously hours passed, they made it not but that was always good and I was happy to get a taste.

“But of course, I’d love it to stick. It’s crazy to think that was 10 years ago. But I’m still here, we’re still trying.”

Piastri recalls Ricciardo heartbreak

Piastri added he remembers the pain of Ricciardo‘s disqualification – due to a fuel flow rate violation – that elevated Jenson Button to his final F1 podium.

Albert Park had become somewhat of a cursed hunting ground for home drivers after Ricciardo‘s penalty but Piastri helped dispell that at the first time of asking in 2023, scoring points that had seemed unlikely heading into the weekend.

Piastri replaced his compatriot at McLaren, but with Ricciardo back at RB it will be the first time Melbourne‘s hosted two drivers since 2013 when Mark Webber was the old hand.

“I remember watching the race on TV and I mean, similar kind of thing as well when I saw he got disqualified, I kind of went through on a much, much lower scale,” Piastri added.

“I saw an Aussie on the podium and that’s what I remember from that day. So yeah, pretty wild to be on the same track 10 years later with the same guy I was watching on TV – pretty, pretty cool. So we can both have a good weekend and make the home crowd proud.”
