Formula 1 confirms six Sprint Races for 2023 season

It's official the 2023 Formula 1 season will feature six Sprint Race weekends throughout the year

-

Formula 1 has officially confirmed that the 2023 season will feature six Sprint Races spread throughout the year.

The sprint weekend format, introduced in 2021 as a way to spice up the race weekend, replaces one of the traditional race weekend’s practice sessions with a short sprint race that is roughly a third of the full race distance, 100 kilometers to be precise.

The previous two seasons each saw three such race weekends, and the powers that be have decided that the weekend format should be extended for the 2023 season.

The overtaking opportunities provided by each circuit, as well as the possibility of racing wheel-to-wheel, were among the criteria used to select the venues for the 2023 Sprint Races.

Domenicali hails format

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said the decision to include six sprint races came after the organization received positive feedback from fans during the first two years.

“We have seen a hugely positive reaction to the F1 Sprint events during the first two years of its running, and we can’t wait to bring even more action to fans with six events next year, including our first US F1 Sprint in Austin,” Domenicali said in a press statement.

“The introduction of the F1 Sprint has created a race weekend that includes three days of competitive racing action and brings more entertainment to fans of the sport as well as additional value for key stakeholders including teams, broadcasters, partners, and host venues.”
