Charles Leclerc tops curtailed Abu Dhabi GP second practice after two red flags

The session saw limited running for the teams after two red flagged incidents.

Charles Leclerc was fastest for Ferrari in second practice for the Abu Dhabi GP in a session which saw limited running after two red flags.

The first red flag came out after just under 10 minutes, with Carlos Sainz losing the rear end of his Ferrari at Turn 3 and crashing into the barriers, necessitating a long delay of over 20 minutes as the damage was cleared up.

Then once the green flags finally came down with under half an hour of the session to go, Nico Hulkenberg lost his Haas at Turn 1, but the crash was less severe and the cars were able to get back out on track with about 15 minutes of running remaining.

The session was also the first opportunity for a number of drivers to get out on track as a host of rookies got their chance to test out in F1 machinery during first practice, including 2023 Formula E world champion Jake Dennis.

McLaren up top

Lando Norris was second for McLaren as he looks to secure fourth in the championship, 0.043 seconds behind Leclerc, ahead of Max Verstappen in third and Valtteri Bottas a strong fourth for Alfa Romeo.

Sergio Perez was fifth overall ahead of George Russell, with the Mercedes likely focussing on race runs after topping first practice and Zhou Guanyu in seventh.

Lewis Hamilton was eighth, with Pierre Gasly and Oscar Piastri rounding out the top 10 at Yas Marina.
