Charles Leclerc pinpoints detail Ferrari must get right to keep Imola advantage over Red Bull

Charles Leclerc hasn't won an F1 race in almost 700 days but looks in contention to break that drought at the 2024 Emilia Romagna GP

Ferrari must get their setup right amid changing conditions according to Charles Leclerc as he prepares for 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix qualifying after a supreme start to the weekend, topping both Friday practice sessions at Imola.

It’s almost 700 days since Leclerc last won a Formula 1 race and he’s record seven second-place finishes in that spell, most recently behind Sainz at the 2024 Australian GP, but it’s looking like he has a genuine shot at breaking that drought at Imola.

Carlos Sainz was third behind Leclerc in FP1 – trailing his teammate by just a tenth – but that gap grew by three positions and 0.387 seconds in FP2 with the Spaniard trialling a different setup.

“We need to keep our feet on the ground because tomorrow it’s going to be big changes with the track conditions, and track position here is absolutely everything,” Leclerc told F1TV.

“It will be great if the weekend continues in that direction, however tomorrow the conditions will change massively, the wind will completely turn around which will have a big effect on all the cars and we’ll have to be the best at anticipating those changes.

“So qualifying will be super important, and it will be important for us to do the job in qualifying there’s still a lot of work to do and we’ll give it all to have a great qualifying tomorrow.”

Ferrari have brought a host of upgrades to Imola as they attempt to pile pressure on Red Bull after Lando NorrisMiami GP victory proved Max Verstappen can be beaten.

Verstappen was subjected to a torrid Friday on Ferrari‘s home turf, struggling to keep his RB20 on track let alone challenge at the top of the timesheets, and he finished FP2 over half a second behind a buoyant Leclerc.

“For now, everything went quite smoothly” Leclerc added. “The feeling with the car is good, the upgrades working as expected which also is a good step, and it’s been a very smooth day so it’s great. Being at home is always a special feeling.

“For Ferrari, being here and having so much support all around the track means a lot to to all of us.”
